Default 4X4 help

My cousin is buying a 85 chevy blazer to tow his toys with. The tranny is from a 2wd truck but the blazer is otherwise 4X4 equipped (hubs/axles). The tranny in the blazer now has only reverse gear. So we want to buy a 4wd tranny to make the Blazer 4wd once we find a cheap transfer case. My question for you all is:

Can the blazer be driven (obviously in 2wd mode) without a transfer case mounted to the 4X4 tranny? I'm assuming there's an output shaft from the tranny to the case.
