2.3 SURGE AT WOT
I did a lot of searches, but found nothing specific to my problem (many "idle"surge threads, but no WOT surges)
■ Vehicle: '98 Odyssey, auto, 2.3 Vtec.....completely stock soccer-mom van.
■ Problem: Surges dramatically ("rapid fire") at WOT when warmed up. When I reduce throttle angle to around 60-ish%, it picks up and runs normal.
■ Codes: P1491 = EGR valve lift sensor insufficient flow detected (of course!)
...............P1259 = Vtec system circuit fault.
...............P0740 = Torque converter clutch circuit malfunction.
■ What I've checked/found so far:
1. Replaced rotor after arcing coil output to center of old rotor (so, thought it was internally grounded)......no help
2. Checked "operational data" with my scanner to see if TPS was erratic/dropping = smooth sweep from 9% (idle) to 87% (WOT).
3. Also checked "op data" for any anomalies in the MAP sensor = seemed okay.
4. Added oil.....was 2qts low! Maybe that'll prevent resetting of the Vtec code (I've cleared the three codes listed above)
■ What I'm GONNA check in the A.M.: Fuel pressure, DURING the anomaly (gauge zip tied to wiper arm).
The thing is.....the prob seems to be temperature related, since it doesn't do it until warmed up. Could this prob be caused by a defective ECT sensor? BTW - the temp reading on my scanner shows 213-ish° when it's hot, but the dash gauge only displays the temp at about halfway between C & H.......is that normal?
Any help from the collective brain trust here at Honda-Tech would be greatly appreciated.......TIA!! One final question.....Is there a way to keep the MIL/CEL off (after I clean all the EGR passages) even if the trans lockup feature isn't working. I can't smog this POS with the light on, even tho lockup doesn't technically affect emissions.
I was thinking of driving it only in 3rd until the light cycled off, then smogging it (OR, does lockup work in 3rd also?). After it's smogged, the light shining in my face won't bother me near as much as the cost of a trans o/haul......just to get it to pass smog, lol!

WOW.......145 hits and no one is willing to offer an opinion? I checked the f/pres and it was okay. I also put in a new ACT sensor just for ***** and giggles.......no change.

Could be several things... ECT, ICM, EGR, Coil, etc are the first that come to mind. Could also be a result/symptom of one of your CEL's.
My suggestion is to diagnose and resolve your check engine lights and more than likely you will solve your issue. No sense in banging your head against a wall trying to figure out the cause is when you have active CEL's. Fix those first and if your problem persists, then go back to the "drawing board".
You mentioned you cleared the codes - have they all come back?

THANX for the response, SS! I had intended to write that I replaced the ECT (not ACT) in the last post. I'm pretty sure the Vtec code was a result of the oil being 2 quarts low and I'm also fairly certain that the converter clutch has nothing to do with the prob - especially since the driveability prob just cropped up recently and the owners mentioned that the trans CEL/code had prevented them from getting the vehicle smogged several months ago.
But - to answer your question - NO......none of the codes/CEL have reappeared. To be fair, tho, I haven't warmed it fully and driven it in the aggressive manner that causes the problem to become evident. It would be nice if it were gone, say, as a result of the ECT - perhaps reading faulty "too-high temps" that put into some kinda "limp-home mode" that caused fuel or spark cut.......but, DUNNO!! It almost felt like I was coming up against a rev limiter, but not at a high-enough RPM to warrant it.
