1990 Accord Stalling on Downshift
I drive a 1990 Honda Accord Ex with the F22A4 motor with 330,000 miles. Today, I experienced something my Honda hasn't done in 26 years.
Upon decelerating WITHOUT braking from higher speeds (60ish, using friction), the car stalls. It only occurs when I allow my Honda to decelerate naturally, not when I'm using my brakes. It does not stall at a stop/idle. The car is quick to restart itself once I apply the gas, so it never fully dies to where I have to turn the key and get it going again. I know it dies because my radio/headlights/etc just stop working. Within seconds of applying gas, everything starts back up.
Recent changes to my car:
Oil changes maintained every 3k to 5k miles.
Newly rebuilt transmission (within the last 4 years)
Changed thermostat bypass hose (the original developed a tear) a few days ago** (U shaped hose which runs underneath the fuel injector)..
**After changing the thermostat bypass hose, I drove it for about an hour and a half, until my car overheated. (There was fluid in it after I changed the hose, by the time I made it to the destination, it appeared my Honda had eaten all of the coolant). Alas, I brought my car back to my home (small block air cooled method and a tow truck). I put distilled water + supercoolant + fluorescent dye into my radiator, and ran that through my system. Upon inspection, I couldn't find a leak or a reason as to why all my radiator fluid disappeared on my first endeavor.
I drove it today to my university again with no overheating issues. Coolant levels have been consistent as well as the temperature. I tried to drive it home and experienced the issue above (stalling at high rpms while downshifting without braking).
I've heard idle air control valve, distributor, etc for issues that sound SIMILAR, but are not what I'm currently experiencing. Any ideas?
