Default 10.2 CR, which cams?

As topic says, I have a b16 and I want to upgrade my cams.

Are s2s2 stage 2 cams too much running on stock compression.

s2s2 stage 1, do they yield good power? I want a set of cams that will give me decent mid range gains, but also make power to 8.5K RPM or so.

Please only reply if you have had first hand experience. TIA

I know, the bigger the cam the more compression is needed to make optimum power, I was curious to know if I can get away with stage 2 cams with the stock compression (10.2:1).

Any more thoughts, or insight?

I think I am going to do it, unless somebody convinces me otherwise.

Not that I have the answer, but I am curious as well. I'm sitting on my block right now because the pistons I have will keep me in the 10.2 to 10.6 range and I don't want to be handcuffed either if at all possible.

With a 10.2:1 CR i would just go with the Stage1's but if you want...get the Stage2's and see what kind of power you make with those.

Yea you could get a thinner head gasket to bump up the CR
or you could mill the head...Decisions, decisions, decisions....

I just back from the shop that is going to be doing the work for me.

Skunk2 stage 3 cams are the same price as stage 2 cams. And he says that he would get the stage 3's, along with all my friends. But I am going to be doing moderate head work, so with the head work I think stage 3's will be fine, but maybe I'll just go with stage 2's.

I want a good midgange powerband, so the stage 3 cams might be too much.

stage 2's recommend lightened valvetrain and double valve springs, and stage 3s' require it.

The Stage 1's should fit your needs if you are not uping the CR nor upgrading your valvetrain. I have seen some cars on the this board hit 185-200 with the stage 1's on stock compressions or a little over stock CR.

Here's a link to MPH's post.

There's also some info on Stage 2 cams but nothing truetly meaningful.

Ok here is my setup, and my goal is around 170 WHP.

- intake (ghetto), but it works

- JDM 4 to 1 header with 2.5" collector

- 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust, straight through muffler, high flow cat. (have testpipe ready to go for the track.)

My main decision is what cams to get.

Can i reach 170 or so WHP with skunk2 stage 1 cams, the mods listed above. Oh, I am getting a V-AFC and and skunk 2 IM very shortly as well. This is with the stock valvetrain and stock ECU (pr3)
