Default question... is this normal?

alright... i looked at my springs when i was changing my tires and i noticed something strange. i don't know if it's normal, but my springs (H&R race) were once coated red but i noticed rust spots on the top/bottom of all the coils. i think the coils banged up against each other (like the picture) and rubbed the red coat off. is this normal for the coils to make contact with each other??

Its not uncommon for some coils to touch (bind), but its not something you want happening often as it upsets the handling of the car, and is a sign that you are not running the proper springs for the rest of your setup. If the coils are bound at static ride height (car not moving, sitting on the ground), then its time for new springs.

yeah...i haven't had time to install my koni yellows yet.

my h&r race springs are virtually brand new. and they are not touching when the car isn't moving.

can this eventually ruin the springs?

i have the same springs on my car too, and they hay that issue too. i think its normal for the dead coils to bind, but not the regualar coils.

H&R seems to use a lot of "dead coils" in their spring design to achieve their spring rates. which will basically be compressed completely easily at stock height or not much more compressed length. so yes, its normal.

btw, i never noticed my prokits making any noise. only the rear springs were progressive anyway, and they were progressive tender springs, not just dead coils.

It's normal with spring with coils that are close to each other like the H&R and Neuspeed springs. I have the H&R Sport and the top half of coils rest on each other.
