I am going to fill my 91 Accord's chassis with foam this summer and all the products suggested in other DIY's and write ups are no longer sold. Looking around i found this

Just found out it will work http://www.sr20-forum.com/suspension...chassis-2.html (top 2nd page) how ever it suggests 8 or 16 lb. I feel better using 4lb so there's less chance of bulging if I overfill. Any advice?

It's a chassis modification akin to strut bars if you will.

 

Indeed. Fills the "gaps" in the frame of the car.

 

It stiffens the chassis which helps the suspension do it's job more effectively as more energy is transferred through the chassis. Allows stiffer springs without sacrificing ride quality.

Tech/Misc or Welding/Fabrication just seems more appropriate for topics such as this, but between the two, I can't decide which is actually better.

 

Chassis tuning is suspension related. Back on topic... what's the best density to use? I have also seen that it's better to leave some areas unfilled as it gives an outlet to excess energy, but I can't find what areas these are.

 

This may be better suited to be the autocross/road race forum. I doubt most of the people who come in the forum have ever considered doing this.

Although, for how cheap this sounds I am interested in learning more about this.

 

I think I'll be able to do it for less than $100 and have hear about a 30% increase in stiffness. The biggest drawback I have seen is it MESSY, and it is possible to overfill and bulge the rails.

 

$100 isn't bad at all, I've spend 3x on a damn strut bar.

I'm not looking to do it now, but it's peaked my intrust.

 

The majority of people in that forum have rules sets to conform to, of which chassis foaming is going to be well beyond most.

Meaning, you probably aren't going to find any autocrossers or road racers who have done this.

I've considered it in the past, until I found out that doing so would make the car illegal for pretty much any form of sanctioned racing that isn't a "time attack".

 

Probably that cheap but the only "kit" I've seen is from JUN Auto and carries a JUN price tag. It's not to say their stuff is needlessly expensive but when you get to something that probably isn't their product the mark-up isn't easily justified.

Is it really a noticable diference? i've seen the Jun kit before, that price seems pretty steep.

 

Just as a heads up, this will trap moisture in an enclosed space and make stuff rust something awful.I also can't see how this would come even remotely close to making the chassis 30% stiffer.
