Ok everyone, I am getting ready to help a friend of mine install agx shocks and h&r sport springs on her '93 civic ex. I myself have a '94 ex that I have done quite a bit of work on so I am not worried about the actual install of the shocks and springs themselves. What I AM worried about is breaking the rear lower shock bolts. I know this is a common problem on these cars, my rear lower shock bolts are totally rusted and I broke the head off one of them when I was trying to take it out. (still haven’t gotten it fixed) I searched both the archive and the recent posts to see if anyone had any advice for doing this and wasn't able to come up with much so I am here to ask for help. Of course before even thinking about trying to loosen the bolts I will spray them down heavily with PB Blast, after that I am not sure what to do. Are there any tricks to this that might help stop the bolts from breaking off? Heat? Slow force? Impact force? If the bolts do break how do you go about getting them out of there without doing more damage?

Thank you in advance to anyone that can help out with this possible problem. We are going to try to do this job in time for an autox coming up soon and don't have time for serious problems.

 

when i had to replace my shocks I just did it nice and slow, with lots of WD-40... it seemed to work okay...

on my 96 ex, they broke off, but i just drilled them out and got new bolts from lowes, grade 10.

 

Soak all those bolts with some Liquid Wrench or PB Blaster before you start doing anything. Between that and a breaker bar, you shouldn't have any problem. I just did my 94 the other day, and it was a breeze.

i did exactly wat brentmc79 did was a complete brezee make sure u use pb blaster that **** ownze alll bolts all u do is spray the nut genoursly then hit it with a wrench to shake make the liquid get in there then spray it again then take a breaker bar and call it a day

 

so pretty much just soak it down, wait a while, and hope for the best... hmm

 

when i did my i took a blow torch to it, then some WD40 and it worked fine
