Running Rich, Searched past posts, cant find solution.
I am running rich, my check engine light doesn't come on though, I must not be rich enough to throw a code, not very rich but rich enough not to pass CA emmisions.
these are the things that I have done to try to fix my richness.
replaced Dizzy cap and rotor
NGK plugs are 5k miles old and I regapped them at .04
check resistance of plug wires and they are all under 10Kohms
I did an oil change and am now running Mobil 1 10W-30
readjusted valves on the tight side
ran injector cleaner on a half a tank of gas
I have a fuel filter that I replaced 5k miles ago
I have a clean air filter
I can't find any vacuum leaks
I set my timing back to stock at 14 BDTC
I played with the idle screw and set it to stock
I replace the 02 sensor
I did a compression check and my numbers are:
Cylinder 1: 170
2:150 hmmmmm
3:170
4:170
I did notice that my plugs were black and they were all wet.
Checked my oil again to see if it was milky and it isn't.
Checked the color of the smoke and its black, must be the affects of going to synthetic at 190000miles, Damn, should of kept it Dino oil.
I reset the CPU and let it idle for 10 minutes.
I knocked on my cat to see if it rattled, and it didn't
I can't think of anything else.
What else could it be.
Someone, Please help me!!!

"Checked the color of the smoke and you can barely see it but its black when you gun it."
So it burns oil? Do a leak down test on cylinder 2 to see if its your valve seals or piston rings. How old is your cat? They go bad or get clogged eventually.
And what makes you think its running rich. I would think smoke out the exhaust would be more of an indication of a mechanical problem than too much fuel on a stock motor.

The reason why I think its running rich is because it failed CA smog test. The tech told me its HC's where too high and that was an indication of richness. And my exhaust stinks and blows black smoke occasionaly. As for my Cat, I don't know when it was replaced, Ive had the car since it had 135K miles on it and it has 190K now so it might still be the stock cat. How long do cats last?
As for the burning oil part, could it be the Mobil 1 transition, going full synthetic on an engine that probably just seen Dino its entire life, probably not the best idea? I just started using synthetic in the car, figured if I use better oil the engine would last longer, could be wrong.

someone please help me, its been two months since my Gross Polluter status and I need to get my car to pass. My other transportation is a 84 Full size 4x4 gassoholic.
If your a gross polluter just get the state to pay for whatever is fuxored. You have to go to a test only station once your a gross polluter anyway. If your going to a regular smog tech use a diff cat from a friend and find out why your burning oil. You could also try this crap I cant remember the name of that you pour in the engine to help pass smog...maybe. Nothing else to really say imo.
