bar around steering column

bar around steering column

i've heard that the bar around the steering column is used to hold it in place but i have it off at the moment and the steering column seems pretty secure. can anyonw tell me if this is true or not or if i need this bar

Of course you need the support bar. Mine droped a bit when I removed it, if I'm remebering right..
