i did a compression check and number 4 is 110 3 210
could this be a ringland or bent valves?

Another thread just like this, oil/smoke coming out of the breather, one or more of the cylinders is down on compression. BROKEN RINGLANDS!

You are getting blow-by somewhere. it could be your ringlands, too much overlap...a number of things. leakdown is a good start to finding the problem.

Those numbers are pretty damn low. Were you running any sort of catch can setup on your car? Or did you still have the stock PCV system in use?

sounds like what happened to my last 2 motors. most definetely your ringlands/rings. time for a rebuild.

why would too much overlap give you smoke out the breather cap? care to explain?

I think I may have that same issue. What happens if you continue to run it this way? Will they get worse? Can it cause other things to go wrong???

Just curious...

Sounds about right man.

Stock piston ringlands love to break.

Sympton #1, idle is ruffer then it used to be

Sympton #2, oil from breather hole on valve cover

Sympton #3, white smoke from valve cover breather

= broken ring lands, and besides with those kind of numbers on the compression u already knew whats the delio.

Time for a rebuild and more HP

That is what gets broken from forced induction. It could be from many things but usually from detonation.

Here is discussion about broken ring lands and symptoms.

maybe its just me.. but woudln't running a breather valve do more damage?.. in cloggs up with oil vapors eventually and doesn't allow to breathe.. especially if car has occasional blowby or smoke coming out..

Running a breather is just another air filter without all the hoses.

Yes your right about the clogging up part but all cars should be maintained properly to prevent stuff like this from happening.

running a car with broken ring lands can cause excess piston wall damage, that is the real major concern IMO.

yes it will get worse, and it will cause (more) damage to your cylinder walls if you continue to drive it.

I just did a motor swap, had to keep driving before the swap (only car) and it got so bad that smoke/oil was basically pouring out my exhaust & breather towards the end. and the oil contained a LOT of gas...

I have a custom setup on my 1992 SI with a JDM H22. My car smells like hot oil at stop lights because I have my stock PCV gutted but still plugged in. From there, i run a clear hose to the top port on an endyn catch can, then I also run a clear hose from the valve cover port to the other nipple on the endyn catch can. I mounted the catch can right by my coolant overfill container. I plug off the bottom port as I can always just relieve it when it fills up with oil. My car when run hard or if its really warm will have a little smoke coming out of big filter on top and you can clearly see it at night pouring out the headlight, but I do not have any compression loss. So I think a lot of this needs to be cleared up, because of course you are going to have some oily air coming out from HOT internals. It's not always going to be the symptom of an overbeat, not tuned, car that has broken ringlands.

The grommet that holds my PCV to the valve cover on my h22 leaks a little oil when the car is run hard as hell all the way till I shift into 5th in the 1320. But my car also runs mid 12's with over 300whp on 8psi.

Breathers will smoke a little. Just shouldn't be clouds and clouds of smoke. My car is a prime example.

honestly, i don't see any reason why an engine should smoke at idle when there is nothing wrong w/ the car. if everything was running right, it shouldn't smoke. now for cars running a lot of boost/high c/r, etc. you might be getting some blow-y but not excessively where you see blue smoke coming out everywhere.

I've always known that I had some blow by, but the other day when I was looking around the valve cover and seen there was some oil residue coming from the breather filter, and then I saw this post it made me think that perhaps my rings are worn or I may have cracked or broken ringlands. I'm going to do a leakdown test hopefully this weekend to see if that's the case. At the very least narrow it down. Mine only smokes when I'm on it..., but I thought that maybe it was running rich because it doesn't do it all the time like at idle or just cruising speed. The last time I did compression test it was 210-215 all four cylinders.

i did a compression check today
4=85 added a cap of oil and it jumped to 105
3=210
2=210
1=220

so i am guessing its my ringlands right?

Yes I would say the ringlands, My motor did the same thing a couple years ago when i broke the ringlands in 3 cylinders.
