Is anyone using a fuel cell?
I'm looking into makeing a track only R and I'm adding costs to see what this project is going to cost me.
One of the items I have in mind is a fuel cell. I saw Fuel Safe and they are about, $350-$500. I also looked at the Mugen which is $8,200
.
Any input is appreciated!

Two things:
One- the guys in RR/Autox will know more about this sort of thing, you might have better luck there.
Two- while the $8200 Mugen thing is without a doubt too much $$$, a fuel cell is not something you want to skimp on, considering you're trusting your life with it, and burning to death would not be a fun way to go.

Why do you want a fuel cell?
The stock gas tank is fine, just reinforce the mounting straps. A poorly installed cell will be more dangerous than the stock tank.

Har har...
Installing a cell correctly is *not* cheap either, and I wouldnt do it without a cage as you'll need to cut the floor pan and build a 'box' for the cell.

You need something to support the cell. Cut out floor, weld box structure to the cage, drop cell in box, plumb tubing.
Unless you're running enduros and need a big *** cell and a dry break, I just dont think its worth it.

RJ, while we're on the subject, are there ANY benefits to running a cell other than larger volume capacity? I haven't looked into it at all, and have no need for it or the cost of such a thing.
I am no expert on fuel cells, but from what I can see the main reasons for getting one are:
1. Safety
2. Baffling
3. Capacity (large for enduros or much smaller for sprint races)
4. Can fill them much faster than a normal tank
5. They just look blinging sitting back there.

Cell "cage" for my H1 car

Mounted back there will be a pre pump filter, the pump, post pump filter and FPR. Then all that stuff will have a sheet metal box built around it.
I'm **** with my own safety. One thing you should skimp on either is the fire system. Get a halon system. A hand held extinguisher is a worthless POS in a race car. With the car burning, do you plan to fight the fire from inside?

My car has a 16 point FIA cage, the REAL mugen ecu, JDM final drive, KAAZ plated LSD, H&R coilovers, Recaro and OMP Carbon Fiber seats, Sabelt 5 point harnesses, OMP Wrc steering wheel, AlfaPro Rally computer, Hella light pod, a number of other things. The fuel cell is something you should wait for. If you really want a track attack Integra, you need to pick a class you want to build it for and work from there. First things first I remove all that interior and switch out the seats for some race seats and harnesses. If possible I'd do a cage (make sure it is built to class specs) because it is risky business putting in a cell without the chassis reinforcement provided by a cage. That is one of the main things that will determine the balance of your car. Fuel cell size and placement is critical so if you decide to go with a fuel cell make sure you get the right capacity and remember.. location is critical! I'm doing rally and I opted not to do a fuel cell mainly due to the risks involved. make sure you spend a lot of time doing corner weights.. You want to keep that beautiful type-r weight balance.
So what i'm trying to figure out is how bad do i need it. I wanted to get one not because I knew about safety, but because "race" cars had them.
Should I look into a fire prevention system first?

id keep the stock tank. i think you'd run HC, and i don't see HC making fuel cell a requirments.
fire system would be on my top list.
im actually thinking about getting a hand held tell i can make my car a dedicated track car.
after braking down on the track at infenion and seeing how long it takes the saftey crew to get there, i could have got out and had something taken care of, alil is better then nothing.
now thats not to say the saftey crew doesn't do there job good they do, its just that i could be out of my car by the time i stop

If you only have the money to spend on one or the other, get the fire system.

if you buy one of those hi dollar fuel cells you are definately retarded.
check out summit for fuel cells. just make sure it is installed right and im not sure about road racing, but i know in drag racving you need a 1/4 inch sheetmetal firewall to separate the cell from the cabin . just remember your gonna need new fuel system stuff too. prob need to run new lines and sump and external pump.

Why is spending the money on a good cell (i.e. ATL, Fuel Safe) retarded?

Nice cage! Is that the fuel cell in the back?
If you don't mind me asking, what kind of cage is that? Weld in or bolt in? A friend of mine wants to get a good one.

I wouldn't spend the $8,200 for a Mugen but I would spend $1,200 on a top of the line Fuel Safe.

Why is spending more money associated with better? Trust me there is alot better out there for about 1/4 of the price if not less. you tell me what makes your $1200 cells better than something you can custom make or get from summit or sometihng similar? They dont just make cells that are junk and not safe, im sure they need to pass some SFI specs
this is one of the higer dollar ones off Summit just as an example, im sure there is better out there, but im not gonna do a big search. but i can tell you, you prob wont find much of a diff in what your looking at other than name

haha, $8200 is ridiculous, you could buy a frickin car for that much.
