Switching to the synthetic oil
When and/or should I switch to the Motor 1 synthetic?
Are there any serious pros and cons? I'm really considering it b/c I want to preserve my engine (140k miles) a bit longer but have little mech knowledge.
Pls, help.
BTW: I think the Lucas additive works well for regular daily driving at 20% despite the negative bias of a recent independent study.

You don't really need synthetic oil to "preserve" your engine - just regular oil changes and maintenance.
My D16A6 has 238,000 reasons to prove it.

I used to use Castrol and Mobil 1 10w30. One day I had the extra cash so I bought some Royal purple and did an oil change. Gas mileage got +3 mpg and my engine was noticibly quieter. I guess it all depends on your preferences. $1.50 - $2.50 for the avg oil, or $5.99 for Royal Purple. I've been very happy with my purchase. - Darrell

Gullibility and the Placebo Effect.
For a daily driver that does not see strenunous usage, synthetic oil is really more of a waste of money than anything else, especially if you're changing your oil frequently. Certainly, synthetic lubricants do provide superior protection, but I personally feel that the costs outweigh the benefits in the long term.
The main benefits of synthetic are its ability to withstand extreme high temperatures, and/or extended change intervals. If you buy synthetic oil just to daily drive and change it every 3000 miles, you're just spending a lot more money than you need to.
BTW, if your car already "uses" a considerable amount of oil (these cars are notorious for it), I guarantee you it will use even more if you switch to synthetic.
I personally use regular 10W-40 Castrol and a Toyo Roki filter in my CRX track car, and I change it every 2500 miles or sooner (since I don't have an oil cooler yet). 238,000 miles on this engine and still going strong . . . though it eats about a quart every 800 miles or so.
JMHO, YMMV.

You can switch at anytime, the benefits are longer engine life because of reduced friction, and the detergents in synthetic oil will help clean out the garbage that has built up in your engine over time. Just be sure to fun a high quality oil filter, such as Wix, purolator pure 1, or amsoil.
btw, i run redline synthetic and a pure 1 filter

I agree with with Targa said, the big advantage of synthetic is extended service intervals. So if your going to change it ever 3k or if you burn a lot of oil I would keep going with conventional oil. I have 233 xxxkms on my civic and it runs like new, using Castrol and Honda OEM filters.....
