The Time Has Come: ITR #1240 smokes at idle
Well, about 8 months ago I went turbo. Stock internals. No timing control. Sort of an experiment to see how much abuse my C5 could take. At 7.5 psi I made 256hp/190tq.
8 months of driving it like a bitch.
4 track days chasing down Porsches
20 odd drag passes (best time 13.2 @114)
It ate 1 liter of oil every 30 mins at the track from the day the turbo went on. I suspect my rings were already on the way out. Other than that, it pulled strong.
Now it barely idles, throttle response at tip in is like a 2 second delay. It backfires at part throttle. It smokes at idle, pees a cloud of blue when I rev it in neutral, and pumps out a smoke screen a la James Bond under load.
Time for the rebuild.
I'm not surprised, I knew this day was coming. It's just a little sad when I know I'll be without a car for the next three months. Oh well. Better Faster Stronger.
There will be pics and posts as the build progresses.
400 hp here I come!!!

Winter is coming. No big deal.

I remember your car smoking at the meet back in August. Sorry to hear that your engine is on it's way out. Glad to hear that your welcoming the re-build with open arms. Sort of. Good luck with the project.

You should have had some type of timing retard under boost. then not only could you have ran a higher psi...but it would probably still be putting around today w/ no problems

Word of advice:
My friend and I just re-built his GSR.
Make sure you have all the parts in hand before you pull the motor. We had so many false promises from dealers who promised to send parts from their on-hand stock but were really drop shipping. In too many cases the manufacturers and importers were out of stock resulting in MONTHS of down time.
Also make SURE that the pistons you get are the ones you want. LOTS of incompetency out there.

I was reading posts on HT.com (uh...I guess that's what you tend to do here)
and kept seeing the whole pro drive oil pump gear being posted up and decided to do a search.
I'm not sure if this will sway anybody's intentions of using their products....but as a local to Dr. Pooface.....I'd hate to hear your investment go literally to pieces....

Please be wary before purchasing..... Best of luck!

i been runnin a prodrive oil pump gear for over 2 years now(now problems yet, knock on wood) and my buddy has one in his car also. if you read the post above the guy that broke the gear was supposed to send a peice of it to my buddy to do a hardness test on the gear since they were saying it looked the same inside as a stock gear, so far he never recived this piece to test. im not sticking up for prodrive and i know people making alot of power with the stock oil pump gears. i posted about how these prodrive oil pump gears are breaking(https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=964377) but no one replied. when i broke my stock oil pump i didnt want to buy another one so i got the prodrive. so, good luck Dr. with whatever pump you chose.
