Purchasing a 97-01 Prelude
Hey all.
I use to own a 1994 Prelude but I got hit by a drunk driver (
). So now I'm looking for a newer model one.
Anything special I should be looking for? Any serious known problems?
I'm going to spend a little under $10,000 and most ludes I have seen under that price range seem to be at about 80K miles.
Thanks for the help.

You could have searched on this, it has been talked about too many times, but to summarize, buy 98 and up and 5 speed. Don't buy automatic, the transmission fails on it.
I have one and it is fine, because i have a 3 year warranty on my new transmission. Second one for the car.
So, go ahead and test it out, and make sure that 5th gear is good on that 5 speed.
Check for oil consumption after you test it out in vtec engagement, coloration, leaks around the headgasket section, clutch, brakes. Even the alignment, if it pulls to damn to either side, check and see if any suspension work was done.
That should be enough, all other problems, search is your friend.

Thanks. I do plan on buying a 5spd. In terms of coloration what should I be looking for?
I just meant if there is anything SPECIFIC for preludes I should look out for.

look for the vin sticker on every piece of the car chassis: hood, trunk, doors, quarter panel when you open the door, the front end, a lot of body parts has them. ABS must work, if not no good.
vtec must kick in 5200 rpm if not, go somewhere else.
i can't think of anything else man, i have an auto and that is what i'd look for.

I had a 4th gen and although I loved it, after sitting in my friends 5th gen; i have to switch over. I don't really care about heavy as I'm not into speed, as long as my car can get to 70, I'm happy. I just love how the 5th gens are shaped, and I love the interior.
I'm more into appearance rather than performance.

i got my 98 silver prelude for 9500 with 54k miles on it. very good paint job. besides the cat converter than went bad and was replaced free by honda its perfect. and i was looking for a car for 2 years, and looked for a prelude for 6 months. found it in the shittiest place to look for cars, recycler.com. point is it takes time, or at least thats what my conclusion is, but i am only 17
if you get one with a tad bit higher miles...like the 60-80k mark, i would ask the previous owner when the timing belt was replaced, and the tensioner, when i bought mine with 48k, the tensioner went out and had to replace it, and it was expensive, luckily the dealership covered it, but it was a lot of labor.
i mean....it is a honda, so it is going to run pretty well, but definatly get the 5sp. As for trim packages.....the SH will have the ATTS system, but same engine, so power isnt really a big deal.
just make sure to get it checked out by a mechanic you trust, that is the best way to make sure.
