jdm d15b: anyone run this motor?
Hey guys, trying to get an opinion. Here's the scoop. I've got a 1990 Hatcback Civic, my buddy's gotta '91 CRX HF. I'm thinking about running the JDM D15B because of the simplicity of the swap and the affordability. (am ordering the motor from HMotors.) Anyway, he's getting a complete JDM B16a swap, (2800 bucks with LSD tranny) and I'm wondering if it's really worth paying a little under 2K more for 30 horses at the flywheel. I know these are two diff. motors but I'm getting a tranny for 50 bucks (cable) and a motor for about 750 shipped, with ALL of the parts. Any opinons would be helpful.
ed: I was also wondering if anyone runs the jdm d15b, and whether you like it or not. Thanks guys.

with the 2 grand you save, you could easily get more that 30 horses. turbo? nitrous? the question is what can YOU do with 2 grand? i would drop a 500 cadillac into it and scare myself silly. yu could drive around on the d15 for normal use and fire up the big boy for those pesky corvettes. i can get you a complete 500 cadillac or 455 olds front wheel drive drivetrain for about 550.

You sir are definately not alone. I hope this man is drunk. I would very much like to equip my flame suit and let the mayhem begin.

A friend of mine has a JDM d15b in his 92 hatch. It's a very peppy engine. He let me drive it and I was surprised as how quick it was for being a 1.5 sohc. Good inexpensive engine upgrade if you ask me.
I'd get one of those over a b16 any day.

I just used the A6 dizzy in my car. All I had to do was open up the Top mounting hole a little with my dremmel. But that was just because I didn't have the money to convert to obdI. But I plan to in the near future.
Also I got my complete motor from a local wrecking yard for $300 even.

because the d15b can accept all after market parts and for the price its cheaper to get the jdm actualy and the cams are much more wilder then the stock z6 comparable to the zex stage 1 cams so for the money deff go with the d15b my opinion

cams are the same

The d15b block is not a regular d15 block. It's the same block that's used in the vx motors. We took one apart and the rods are the same as the rods I had sitting from an A6 teardown. Some people, including myself, like the d15b for the top end compared to the z6. The R/S ratio is better in the d15b, so the power is found higher in the rev range and falls off later than the z6.
I wouls buy a d15b over a b16 even if they were offered to me for the same price. That's how nice these things are.

Thanks a lot man, that really helps. I just thought it was kind of stupid to spend so much money on the complete swap. If I had a 92 or something like that, and all I needed was the long block, i'd probably go for the b16, but as it is, I think I'll be pretty happy. I also have plans to run N20 so that'll put me way above a stock b16 as far as hp, even with a minimal sized dry shot, and I'll still be spending about 1200 less than my friend.
He doesn't stand a chance... lol

the d15b is deffenately the chioce. mine runs 14.8 with ihe and an auto ecu. even though it makes less power than a b16 it is lighter and makes basically the same tourque. the d15b is around 9.2:1 compression so it runs great with a turbo. im sure with the money you save you can buy a turbo and easily kill any n/a b16.

jdm d15b??? cause they have the same bottom end except for maybe pistons....the jdm d15b vtec and the d15z1 were the only d15's with the thicker rods like the d16 had.

im sayin i built my internals with z6 parts (aftermarket eagle rods skunk2 titanium valves springs retainers) so it would be more dependable with the charger
