Default h22a1 vs. h22a4

sup,
i'm looking to buy a prelude soon, and wondering does hte 5th gen have a h22a1 or h22 a4?

What are the differences?

Do the 4th gen VTEC have h22a1 or h22a4?

Are there any other types of h22s?

Thanks

A4 is the ODBII motor. The 96 A1 is OBDII too. 93-95 A1 is ODBI

A1 has 190hp (10:1 comp psitons)
A4 has 195hp. I think the later A4's had 200 in the Type SH

OBD II is the implementation of new equipment to help reduce the amount of "bad stuff" a combustion engine produces and puts into the atmosphere. For fear of the greenhouse effect and global warming caused by "smog", this is now standard on all new vehicles in the united states after 1996.

i know that....although i hear of people degrading to obd1 for a certain turbo to work or something in that range. What are some reasons to degrade to obd1? Thanks

Because when you start adding more air flow and more fuel and so on and so forth, the ECU in OBD II is going to think that there is a malfunction and throw the car into limp mode from being to rich/lean or whatever. By switching to OBD 1, you can use a piggy back type tuning program to change all your maps, and have as much air/fuel and flow as you want, without the ECU freaking and throwing a code or putting the car into limp mode.

Yes with engine work you in all probability wont pass smog.
Yes with an OBD1 ECU in an OBD II Chassis they will fail you.
Yes if you do not pass the visual part of the inspection you will fail.

Most places will plug a hand held diagnostic type device into your car to be sure all your emissions equipment is working properly.

What is your goal for your setup? turbo? all motor? stock? Auto-X ?

Its not so much downgrading, the OBD-I ECU's are just less complex, less things to have to worry about when running Hondata, or any other type of engine management with the exception of a VAFC ( doesnt really count as management)

My plans are to have a street car that can be reliable and fast. I'm 16....I've been working for 1.5 Years in fast food to buy a 5th Gen Prelude, and hopefully november i will find one. Being a full time student and part time employee i want to keep as much reliablity as i can. Although i would donate some for performance. My budget is 8500 for a 5th gen Prelude, anyways my goals are performance. I'm not sure if i am going to go turbo because of my little knowledge with cars. Although i've been learning off helpful forums and good members like you. Two months ago i had no clue wat VTEC was...so i keep trying to get more knowledge. My plans for the Prelude when i get it in November is first putting some bolt on mods such as apexi n1 exhaust, dc sports header, etc....

can a obd2 ecu work with a ob1 sensor?

thanks

one of the reasons i am learning is so i won't fix up the car wrong.

ex. many high school students here put a fartcan muffler and a plastic looking spoiler **** on a civic dx or something, HAHA.

you dont need to change over to OBD 1 to use boltons.

although i would suggest getting a better header, or doing the collector mod, as the DC hardly flows better than stock. Look into a GReddy header, should be able to find one for pretty cheap.

The ECU will compensate for your boltons, you only really need tuning with mods that DRASTICLY change the flow and dynamics of the motor. (a high quality header or headwork changes the flow)

I would also suggest some type of suspension work as it does make a world of difference. You should be able to find everything you need in the classifieds on this forum/website. Remeber to take your time, and research your decisions before diving head first into the unknown.

when all else fails, hit the search button. If you cant find your answer there, make a thread and we will be glad to help you.

this is a good attitude. honestly, you can learn so much from these forums and these people. i knew very little about cars when i first started out reading forums liek this a couple of years ago, and now i feel very confident in my knowledge of my car and others.

a good place for basics is: howstuffworks.com, for the basics on trannies and engines. the big FAQ type threads in this forum, and by just observing here for a while.
