1991 Integra: Need Advice on Making an Offer
First time Acura buyer...tho I have owned Preludes.
HERE IT IS: 1991 Acura Integra LS...196,000 miles. Modified exhaust, lowered/modified suspension, new distributor and wires, and supposedly has had oil changed every 3,000. The body's in excellent condition...95% perfect. Two quarter size dings in it. A few, very small chips of paint missing from the front end (stock paint.) The left rear lense is cracked however (appx. $80-100 for replacement.) The interior is 85% perfect. Some seat wear...one small tear in the driver's side bucket. Very clean. I looked at it this morning for about 20 mins...and just spoke with the owner briefly afterwards. His g/f is asking $3,000 (but will work with me.) He also indicated that it does not leak or smoke whatsoever. I have yet to look at the engine or test drive it. How much is this car worth and what should I have checked out?...i.e. compression check, diagnostic, leaks etc... Thanks.

$3,000 is too much. I just bought a 1992 LS (92-93 have 10 more hp than the 90-91 motors) with 132k miles for that much, and that was a little bit below private party blue book. My car is in perfect condition, original paint is still glossy, no accidents, interior is spotless, new clutch and radiator, and 1 owner.
Check out kbb.com, but the mileage is pretty high and the mods shouldn't really help the value, so I would say under $2,000 would be a decent price.
Just checked, the kbb.com private party value, assuming it has a/c, cruise, power windows, etc is $2700. That is also for a fully reconditioned car, in perfect condition - a cracked tail light, ripped seat, paint chips do not constitute perfect condition. The highest I would go is like $2200.
Do a compression test, check for body work, make sure there are no grinds in any gear, look at the cv boots, check for exhaust leaks, make sure the trunk floor doesn't have any leaks (evidence of a rear end collision), and make sure all of the electronics work (a/c, radio, lights, signals, etc).

Right on man. I appreciate the response. I'm more of a 1960's muscle car enthusiast but I really liked my 86 and 88 Preludes so I'm testing out the Acura field. I'll take a closer look at this one and then make a substatially less offer for it. 196,000 miles is alot but this will be a temp ride until I can afford a nicer toy. :D Thx.
Well, good luck, I hope you can get a good deal.
For other good Integra resources you might want to check out http://www.g2ic.com or http://www.team-integra.net. They both have good maintenance DIY sections and other info. You might also see if anyone on H-T, T-I, or g2ic is selling their cars - there are a lot of g2ic members in the bay area.
