Default would a less restrictive(fat, wideopen) muffler work

my car runs well and has 170+ mis. its an 84. would a fat muffler be bad for it?

Define fat muffler....

If you're talking about a cat back exhaust; IMO yes it generally free's up low to midrange torque and helps out on the highway. I have noticed with my 90 I don't have to downshift on the highway.

But to JUST get a muffler you're wasting your money and your car will sound like a lawnmower with a glasspack . Invest in a aftermarket cat back or go to a local exhaust shop (like I did) and get a cat back for a little cheaper.
