Ive seen ads for this stuff called engine restore. Its an oil additive that is supposed to help out with compression problems and keep you from burning oil.

lots of V8 guys swear by it. havent had too much feedback about it on a 4 banger, but if you use it get the real stuff that you are mentioning. not a knock off like your header

 

Watch out man, they might try and sell you bottled water with a different label on it. Dump that in your engine

lol just givin ya ****. That says for 6 cylinder and damn sure there is a v8 but i dunno bout 4 banger. Im real hesitant about putting america products in my car.

haha, i know what you mean. my oil pan drain bold rounded off today. got a new one from napa that was the correct thread and size, but still, its napa. so i went to honda and got a new one

 

lol, I know that was the 6 cylender additive bottle and they do make one for us 4 bangers

I've used it before. My H23 was well taken care of though. I use the additive about every 3 oil changes. My H23 burns hardly any oil and it has 173K miles.

My brother has been using it in his 96 V6 Maxima for over 7 years now. He puts it in EVERY oil change. 190K HARD miles and his car STILL does not burn much oil.

I use it every so often. A friend used it in his Rally car just because he didn't care much about that engine.. His compression numbers actaully did increas after about 1k miles..

I have used it in my 90 integra. They sell the 4cyl restore at Pepboys. Noticed a slight increase in performance. Let me emphasize the word SLIGHT. Usually I am not for additives.

How do you know you would not have had the same results without using it at all?

I too am hesitant about using domestic additives in import motors.

 

I don't put any additives in my motor.

Doesn't mean it won't work, I just believe that there are other ways of getting what you want.

 

i've used it, and will probably continue every other oil change. noticed smoother start up when cold and a slightly quieter engine.

 

i know this is a bit off topic but... have any of you used any particular treatments to help combat valve seals going bad? or does this engine treatment do a trick on that as well?

 

I don't know about those cheap ones. You should try the set of z-max or something else. I do not thing additives usually help. If it is broken just replace it

 

i use it in my wife's chevy truck. 5.7L Vortec. it runs great. althouhg you'd probably have to threaten my life for me to use it in my Prelude motor.

and additives aren't to hide issues/broken parts, it is to prevent issues/broken parts.

IIRC it says on it that it can be used in both domestic and foreign motors.

 

I have a 91 Prelude and its got major oil loss problem. (A quart like every few 100 miles) I know I'm burning some (I see the smoke) but I also think I'm leaking some as well. I find it kind of hard to believe an oil aditive, that has to be pretty much motor oil in make up to not cause problems, can actually do anything to a warn down engine.. IMHO

 

Well i think that we have come to the concensus that it for sure wont harm anything, but it might be worth the $5 if it helps out some.
I think ill buy some since my next oil change is about due.

 

Dude, you have how many miles on your car?? 50K ???? you dont have a compression problem at freakin 50K miles. Do a compression check for christ sake, dont just add **** for no reason.

Other guy, if you are losing that much oil, you most likely have an oil leak. Do you see any puddles under your car? can you see where its leaking from? front or back of engine ?

 

actually the FTC was going after a bunch of "engine additive" companies because they found they basically used mineral oil, and also had significant studies proving they did either nothing, or many times actually increased the wear on the engine significantly. I forget exactly which brands they went after, but I'm sure you can find them with a quick google search.

(BTW&gt; I read this in the USA Today around a year or so ago, so those companies might already be off the market or forced to re-state their claims... not too sure though)

The FTC was pursuing engine additive companies for:
(1) making unsubstantiated claims (Slick 50)
(2) using chlorinated parrafin (Yeah, chlorine is slippery...it's also corrosive in your engine. I hope no one here actually used Motor-up)


There is no liquid you can pour into your engine to reverse neglect or repair damage. None

The secrect ingrediant in Slick 50 is plastic powder. Teflon is a plastic.

Restore's "miracle properties" are largely psychological.

 

I do only have 60k on my car, but its better to prevent stuff like that (assuming it works) than try and fix a problem once it occurs.
So i wouldnt be getting this to fix anything, just to maintain my cars "health."

 

what you should do to prevent stuff like that happening to your car is change your oil every 3k miles, use synthetic and make sure all your service stuff is up to date.

if your car is at 60k, you will want to change your tranny fluid, it would help more than that.

 

About the oil and trany fluid, there is a post about synthetic oils and how its bad to switch. Is it alright with my mileage to switch to synthetic?
Also, how is the royal purple sythetic oil and trany fluid, do you recomend it?

do you know how much of a waste of money and resources it is to change synthetic oil every 3000 miles?

mobil 1 can probably keep an adequate TBN for at least 10,000 miles, if not 15,000. the filter needs changing at 7500.

honda doesn't even specify 3000 mi oil changes. do you know who does? jiffy lube and castrol. You ever wonder why?
