Oil Change interval?? Every 3000 miles?
Ok if all my driving is freeway 60miles around trip each day....& using mobil 1. Can I hold off on the oil change or do it every 3k? Its 3k right now and the oil still looks clear.
If you have a fairly new car then you can hold off until 3500-4000 miles. Although, you should note that synthetic oil is capable of lasting up to 5000 miles (assuming that's what you're using). However, if you have a car that has over 100,xxx on the odo, I suggest you change it every 3000 or 3 months, which ever comes first.
What kind of car do you have? What kind of oil filter? Which oil? Mobil1 10w30 or 5w30 or ??? SuperSyn?

People with stock motors usually change the oil every 3k.. Some choose to change it eariler if they have engine work.. You should be fine every 3k when using conventional motor oil..
Edit: I misread your post.. You can hold off to about 4000 but it depends on how you drive.. If you beat on your car daily than you should change the oil more frequently..

you dont need to change your oil every 3000 miles. look at your manual. i know on my integra it says to change my oil every 6000 or 7500 miles. The oil companies are the ones that tell you to change your oil at 3000 miles so you can keep buying oil sooner and spending more money. i change my oil about every 4500 miles or later. sometimes when my maintenance light comes on. crazy huh

This is very true...oil is rated at 3000 miles for all the wemon/uninformed out there that hear "every 3000" and then still change it at 6000 or so...they compenstate for all the stupid people...oil should lasts 4000-4500 easy, just keep it full.
Although I change mine every 3000-3500.

i changed the oil in my stock GSR every 4000 miles or so. sometimes 4500. as was said, the manual recommends an oil change sometime around 6000 miles. the maintainence light will come on at 7500 miles. at 4000 miles, my oil came out damn near the same color it was when it went in. it had under 100,000 on it. i didn't drive it very hard tho. spirited driving was seldom done, and when it was driven hard, it was fun, cause i didn't do it all the time. its not necessary to drive your car into the ground every time you go out.
i hate when people say the change their oil every 2000 miles or some crap like that. that makes me mad. it such a waste of money and oil, and its totally unnecessary. they think they're babying the car when they change it at 2000. my gsr was babied. i would never change my oil at 2000 miles. waste of money.

The originaly owner of my car changed the oil "regularly every 20,000 miles". I was planning on rebuilding anyway but at 175,000 miles with 8 oil changes in it's lifetime it wasn't really burning any noticable oil. A few thousand miles difference between oil changes isn't going to be any real difference IMO for your motor.

I heard that it's not recommended to keep your oil unchanged until the oil light comes on. But hey, I'm just a noob.

The maintenence light and oil light are 2 different things, maintenence light is just to remind you to do the maintenance on your car at whatever mileage it is, the oil light means your super low on oil n needa fill that bitch up

Hey man... I live in Michigan and in the middle of winter I will galdly pay someone to change my oil!!!
I would say that you would be quite alright changing it at 4500 or so. Especially using Mobil 1. Thats what I use and I don't have any problems going to 4500 in between changes. I usually shoot to change it every 3500 or so but i never get to it untill about 4500 anyway. If you wait a while though and then you change your oil and your car feels like it gained an extra 5 Hp, then you waited too long...
how often dose everyone change your oil filters???

If you're driving mosty freeway miles, I would hold off on the oil changes to at least 4,500 using dino oil. With synthetic, I would push about 6,000 miles. This is assuming the oil still has a nice golden color to it before then. (That's what I did when I had a GSR, I guess I am really pushing the longevity of the oil) Make sure you're using quality filters.
The best way to tell if you need an oil change is to LOOK at the oil. Is it dirty? Obviously 3k city vs. 3k freeway is going to be totally different.
*These are all my opinions. Flame me if you want

almost any person who is into cars or is a mechanic will tell u 3000. it is a standard. the dealers say 7500, but at 3000 the oil is pretty dirty, so imagine how dirty it will be at 7500. i know oil is meant to hold the dirt, but after about 3000 miles it cant hold much more. for the price of changing ur own oil, you can afford to change it every 3000 miles. its better to keep ur engine full of fresh, clean oil than to leave it full of dirty, 2-6 month old oil. (depending on how much u drive)

hes talking about using mobile 1 synth, which is not standard oil.....if he was using standard oil then yeah, id say every 3k miles, but w/mobile 1, you simply dont need to unless you really want to....i've even heard of people going 10k btw changes w/mobile 1......i've used mobile 1 on my past 3 hondas and on my wrx each changing the oil at about 4500 miles and have had absolutly no problems at all w/any of those vehicles, otherwise, i wouldnt suggest it....ive talked to other mechanics that feel the same way about mobile 1 as i do.
