TURBO and AUTO-X
So I've been hear you guys saying for the longest time that boosting is not the way to go for autox'ing. BUT I always see rx7 TT's and supra's rip **** up all the time. Also, there are many boosted civics who drift in Japan. What's the deal? and don't give me comments such as "Type-R's were made for all-motor".
THey have small turbos that spool in quickly and usually two of them.
If you want to have that kind of response you can go with a small turbo
but then you will not get the high rpm power. Like everything else in life,
its all about trade offs and what you are willing to give up to get what you
want.

sgT hit on the main point, small turbos, esp. nice ball bearing turbos. You get less of an on-off surge, the power is more usable in the lower RPM's, but you have to give up the huge, impressive dyno graphs and the quick 1/4's if you want to have a good autocross setup. There is no "best of both worlds."
I have been lucky enough to have a very powerful turbo R drop by the last couple of AZ autocrosses. It's clear to me that off the line and leaving corners, his car pulls 10 times as hard as mine. You can see the chassis twist. But overall, his car is hard to control, and yeilds slower lap times than my G-Stock R. It just depends on your experience with cars like that, how you build them, and what you want to get out of it when you're done.

In my opinion, boosting is not the way to go for autocrossing... You will drop a lot more time with an aftermarket suspension and R compound tires than you will with a turbo or any other FI.

so true, Bob but what if I had all those things squared away? I suppose it would be time for more power.
I don't think that it would be time for more power right away...once you get your new suspension, tires, and probably brake pads, it will take a lot of time to fully exploit the new setup and drive it to the fullest potential. It makes much more sense to master the new handling characteristics of the car before adding large amounts of power. Extra power will help, but only if you can handle the car properly.
