High idle, then car won't start, check engine light, finally starts, erratic idle. WTF?
So I'm at the inspection place to get my car redone because I failed the 1st time.
I replaced the cat, did full tune up with new o2 sensor, fuel filter, PCV, flushed the coolant, oil change, new wires, cap, rotor, plugs, air filter. Not necessarily to pass, but because it was a good excuse to have my mom pay for it
The cat was the culprit anyway.
Anyhow, I pull in and I notice my car is idling at like 2K. Great. Just what I need. I pull onto the rollers and the guy told me my car would pass emissions but I'd need to get two new rear tires [the are BALD] or he'll fail me on the safety inspection. It's at a used tire shop, so go figure
Anyway, he shut my car off after he tested the emissions and was telling me about how he'll pass me if I get new rear tires etc. I don't have any cash on me so I say I'll have to go get some and I'll be back. He says okay.
I go to start my car...nothing. Crank, crank, crank crank, check engine light. GREAT. There's like 4 of the mechanics standing around and they start laughing. Try it again, same thing. So I immediately think main relay from my previous 4G honda experiences, and I keep a spare in my glovebox particularly for situations like this.
Pop in the new relay and she still doesn't go. Wait a few minutes, try again, and she goes. But the idle is at 2K again and then it starts just bouncing up and down from about 500-3000. It's never done anything like this in the ~10K miles I've owned the car and it was slightly annoying that it happened while I was at the shop about my emissions. It's also been at least two weeks since I did all of the above listed, except the cat which ended up taking me a few more days. Suffice to say I've driven a good 500+ miles since I did the tune up.
CLIFFS: High idle, turn off car, car won't start back up, check engine light, starts back up, but then extremely erratic idle.

I can't remember but where you still running a D-series? if so might be the fast idle valve?
In the exact boat right now bud, mine bounces from 800-1600
Im picking up a new TPS sensor and an IACV tomorrow
Instead of first buying the ****, test you tps and make sur youre getting from .45-.50 volts at idle and 4.5-5V WOT
Unbolt your IACV (2 12mm bolts) spray in some carb cleaner, let it dry, reinstall
Check to see your FITV hasnt backed out (theres a great thread about it) but my car doesnt have one as its a newer zc, dunno what motor you have
Junkyard for me tomorrow
