failed smog:HC (ppm) too high at idle
I have a 2000 honda civic lx, live in CA so smog is serious here. I gave it a basic tuneup(wires, plugs, oil change, air filter) before going in for the smog. I passed all emissions across the board EXCEPT for HC at idle. It was measured at 705 RPM's and it measured 162 which is over the max of 100. At 2500 RPM'S i passed no problem measuring in at 22 when they gave me a max of 130. Any idea what might be causing this, of course they pushed me for a diagnostic check and the whole 9 right away but I'm sure it's an easy fix to pass.
One of the guys was pretty cool and told me to check fuel trims and the fuel filter. How would i do that? He said i barely missed it. I went in with the CAT hot and have replaced it 2 years ago along with my 02 sensor. He said it seemed indicative of a misfire but my car pulled no codes. It does run a little rough when idling but it usually goes away once my car is "warmed" up.
Any help is greatly appreciated,

Yea u need a timing light for accuracy... I knew my smog tech and he let me adjust my timing while watching the idle hc reading on the machine ..But if u don't have a smog tech that will let u do thator u can use a timing light u can just loosen the distributor bolts and adjust the distributor very slightly a few degrees can make a substantial difference

hmmm, my uncle knows a guy who's a smog tech. That would make passing really easy obviously but if i had too I could buy a timing light and adjust it myself...is that simplest way to get it done? how about adjusting my idle?

Re: failed smog:HC (ppm) too high at idle
My 91 CRX HF just failed HC at idle today also. Limit is 220ppm, I am at 415. I live close to inspection station so I may not have been fully warmed up. When I bought it I changed the plugs, but not the wires or cap/rotor. I barely drive the car right now but I need to get it through inspection to sell it.
