timing belt change?
I have a fifth gen prelude and I want to change the belt myself. Can I just slip the old one off anf the new one on as long as i dont move the camshafts or crank. Also when is the recomenede change of the timing belt.
I wouldn't try without at least some experience and a Helms...
In theory it seems like you could just slip it on and off, but it never just works like that. I always have to manually turn the cam gears to get the belt on right, and if you **** it up, you just bought a new or rebuilt head.

i wouldnt suggest just slipping it off... you will need a special tool called a stopper for your auto tensioner, its like $15 from honda, i can sell it to you if u want. i just did mine like 2 weeks ago. also, i suggest using a helms while doing this
i can imagine how much of a pain in the *** it would be
with the auto-tesioner. you should just upgrade to the manual
tensioner. it's not that hard, just get the parts and follow the
instructions and you'll be good.

You will definetely need to get the auto tensioner tool. The reason you can't slip it off is because there is always tension on the belt somewhere. In order to get the belt on you need to just barely move the cam gears to get slack, then move them back once the belt is on.
I wouldnt suggest doing the timing belt change yourself unless you are mechanically compitent and have a Helms manual right in front of you. I would also suggest you change to the H23 manual tensioner when you get the belt changed, the autotensioner is known to fail unexpectedly (especially if power has been increased)
As said before, don't do it unless you have the manual and someone w/ you that knows their way around a motor.
It is easy to get those teeth off, and to tension it wrong if you don't know how.
Also, it's fairly involved for someone who's never done anything big. BUT if you're very familiar w/ your car, and have the time and tools, it's a good time to learn and save some cash.

I am planning on doing the auto to manual tensioner swap when i do my timing belt. I was wondering i am gonna do away with my balancer shaft belt. So do i need the H23 balancer shaft tensioner pulley. Bc on the parts list its like 40-50 dollars. I would like to save that money.

You don't need it but it makes it easier.
If you're using the h22 bs pulley, j00 will need the 3mm washer between
the two pulleys so they clear eachother.
