Default OT: 91 Civic SI Hatchback or 93 Si Hatchback?

I'll be looking for a beater car soon to drive daily and help keep miles off the R.
Ive driven my R everyday since March of 2000 and it now has 43,000 miles on it...so its time to give her a break...at least a couples days a week anyways.

Ive always liked the EG bodystyle ever since my cousin bought one brand new in 1993. But the 91 body style can be had for real cheap. I'll probably throw a B16A in it just for some little power...but it wont be a serious hybrid project. My plans are to get the R in track ready form this coming yr.

Just wondering everyones opinion on these 2 cars. Oh, and I might consider a CRX too....hmm, they came in yellow one yr didnt they?

Car, mods, and motor will be much cheaper if you go EF.

An EG will snowball really fast..you`ll fall in love

Yeah, TJ, get EF otherwise you'll end up fixing the EG.

But, in all honesty, I'd just buy a ghetto EG and throw in a "cheap" B18B engine. But, you know that if you get EG, you'll probably go for B18C5 swap than not.

Other "cheap" fast cars (all under $5,000 w/ swap)
-> Mazda MX3 w/ JDM V6 engine (190HP)
-> Mazda Miata w/ newer 1.8L engine
-> Mazda 323 GTX w/ t-upgrade.

I just bought an EG for $2,500 and it came with a 1st-gen B16A, HASport mount kit w/cable-hydro converter, and HalTech stand-alone EK6 system.

Deals are out there - you have to really dig and be patient. I'm selling the swap and the HalTech.

The EF may be cheaper, but they also have a more limited following from aftermarket companies. An EG will prove to be a better car IMO in the long run.

If you ever wrecked your R (get it back ) then you could plop ALL of your R goodies on it and you'll never look back!

The EF will not accept all of you R parts as easily...You'd have to sell your tranny and get a good cable tranny (hard to find, trust me) and either add an LSD and HOPE a 4.78 or 4.929 final will fit in there.

BTW: why in the hell would you want an Si? I just did a swap (back to stock) to sell my old one, then towed a trailer 1300 (650 each way to Ft. Lauderdale from ATL) and am stripping this CX down to get it painted because the Si is too heavy and the sunroof ain't all it's made up to be. You should know, your R ain't got one either.

You say you wouldn't be serious about the hybrid, but if you drop even a B16A in it then it will rival your R in straight line speed - seriously. It will always be cheaper to go faster in the EG. Less mods=more power when you weigh 500lbs. LESS, you know? (2100lbs. vs. 2600lbs.)

A good-bodied EG can go for as cheap as $1,500 - a typical deal if you'll hunt. i've seen as low as $500 cause the motor was blown and the person won a car.

A good-bodied EF I've seen an average of $800. i've seen as low as $200 here at the shop.

The term "beater" for an EG hybrid sounds pretty funny. Do you mean it beats up on a lot of cars?

Later. My 4 cents...

Tom - when you get a "beater" EG for sale in your shop, IM me. I might be interested in ~$2,000 VX or Si EG.

BTW: do NOT take this as anti-ITR propaganda...i'm just saying if he totals his R all will not be lost. There are many reasons why you guys drive Rs, and why I drive an EG (well, technically I'm not driving mine - my fiancee's, yes).

There's a reason why SPOON only messes with the EG, DC2, DC5, and S2000...they know the potential. Ever see a real SPOON EF? I have not. If you find pics, i'd really like to see them.

I like EFs too - I owned one. They are just a little harder to do right and all.

The guys I know that run the EFs with swaps have more problems than I have with my 2 EGs. They break axles more often, and the mounts tend to break easier too if you've got a good enough clutch. Axle seals leaking and **** gets on your nerves afer a while too.

Anyways, I'd be the FIRST to throw you a welcome party if you joined the hybrid brigade.

Have one on me

Why the VX or Si? VTEC wires? It's just as easy to swap in a DX or CX...

The VX and CX are the best IMO because they're the lightest - period.

I'm telling you the Si will bother you when your pals are outrunning you with less mods...not that it's happened to me, but still - I couldn't allow that!

Tom - yeah, VTEC wiring. But, I know I could have you guys, H-A Spec., help me out. I guess I really want Si over anything else... just need a beater with factory goods already. Oh well, I say that now, but if I ever get an EG, I'll shell out for a C5 motor.

Tom: as stated in my original post, this car will be a beater...meaning its not getting a bunch of aftermarket parts so it competes with all the other hybrids out there. Im buying it for one purpose..keep miles off the R...Ill be spending my money on the R...roll cage, Todas etc etc...i just need transportation to and from work...I want something cheap, reliable, and decent looking...Im considering swaping in the B16A just because I dont want a slug of a car, even just driving to and from work in it....see what im saying?

I think Ill look around for an EG...let me know if you find any.

"EG Si, EG Si!!!"

all i have to say is if this will be your beater, and u plan for a mediocre swap.....take the Si, cause it's so much more pleasing to sit on cloth seats, and nice clean interi. Rather than vinyl, vinyl, vinyl......
I love mah Si....i wouldn't take anything else.....i've gotten a lot of **** from people of different walks, saying that i'm stupid for being so devoted to mah Hatch.... I love mah Si EG "."

The Si has the most creature comforts - I know, I had one from 1997 until last Friday - if you're DEAD set on keeping it near-stock, then either get the Si hatch or DARE I say an EX COUPE!?!?

The EX coupe has power windows/doorlocks and the other features that the Si has minus the rear discs (odd I know).

If you want a comfy cruiser, then get the EX - mama's boy!

If you want a quick "beater", get an EG DX hatch. The VX and CX are dogs, and with a simple homemade I/E and a $200 header, I've outran a few 92-95 Si's in a straight line. The Dx hatches are quick for what they are...trust me. Did you see the SoloII FSP champion this year? That's right, 92-95 DX hatch.

A swap will be a pain, esp. a 1st gen B16A. Just keep the DX motor and fix it up. Everyone is sooo quick to swap out the stock motors nowadays that they miss the potential of the 16v D series motors.

Plus, it's a beater, right? 35mpg doesn't sound tempting? How many times do you actually need more power on the daily commute?

T.J knows 1st hand on how quick my stock Si hatch was...hehehehe...

I ran 15.6 all day with only an Akimoto intake and a short shifter. FULL interior (including SPARE TIRE!) and Michelin MXV4s...

It was quick enough to outrun every Si I raced and even a modde 1992 GS-R that someone here used to own (T.J).

I love ******* with you about that T.J. You did beat me @ the strip though - that was my FIRST race @ the strip EVER though...

DX with an Si tranny would be a very nice beater...

An LS swap is dirt cheap and would still be quick enough to pull low 15's...

Black EF built by Spoon in Hot Version #53 Mr. Sp00n introduced the EF himself, saying it has ITR engine/tranny and upgraded brakes (I dont think it had spoon calipers though) and sus.

yoshi - who misses his 91 Si

I actully just got a 96 CX hatch.... I was very lucky when I found this deal probably the best deal I have ever got on a car in my life.... Anyways it goes like this, I met a guy about a year ago and was always telling him if he got rid of his silver 96 to let me know. Long story short he got drunk hit a tree (from the side) and completely fuked the front left suspension/fender/windshield/airbags. He had liability ins. So it sits in his backyard for a year. I see him again and ask him about it and he says he thinks his dad is gonna sit it on the side of the road and take best offer. I immediately go to his pops house and look at it. It is basically a unpolished diamond. So I ask him how much and he says, uhm 800 bux!! I'm like I'll give you 500 and he says SOLD!! Anyways I had it towed to body shop to see what frame damage there was if any.... NONE. Went and bought the whole left suspension today for 100 bux from local salvage yard. I'm gonna do a 99-00 conversion on it as well. So basically after fixing everything and getting it going I'll spend about 1500 w/o paint!! All my friends hate me The car has 80k miles on it. I will show some pics of her before and after when i can afford a camera seeing how i think i just bought a money pit as far as new engine and performance goes.... My poor poor R

B18S5-EG6, hey, how can you come across such a good deal, where are you located? The EG Civic in BayArea are like at least $3K for a CX. Then, the Si could be 4.5-5.5K depends on its condition. I've been looking for a beat up car for months now..... do you have any hook up???
