Default FIPK or COLD AIR INTAKE

Hey, sorry for the noobie questions but i was wondering whats the difference between a Fuel Injection Performance Kit (offered by K & N) and a Cold Air Intake system. Which is more efficient? Are they the same things?

K&N makes three fipk kits:

1)The first and basic kit is just an open cone filter and an adapter that will fir on the end of your rubber intake hose and replaces the stock airbox
2)the FIPK Gen2 is the cone filter and a plastic intake pipe that replaces the stock airbox and rubber intake hose
3)the typhoon intake is the cone filter and an aluminum intake pipe...in red...not sure if they offer other colors

These configurations are what's known as a short ram intake... So when you open the engine bay you can see the filter right where the stock air box is located. The short ram FLOWS better than the stock airbox setup. But there's a drawback. It can suck in the hot air that's inside the engine compartment

COLD AIR INTAKE:

This like the short ram replaces the stock airbox and usually the intake hose. But Instead of locating the filter where the stock airbox is located. Makers relocate the filter lower and away from the engine bay. They usually place infront of the front tire inside the fenderwell. This better cause it takes in cooler air than what's in the engine bay. Cooler air is denser and makes more horsepower than hotter air. Visually when you look inside the engine bay all you see is the intake pipe "bending" down and away from the engine...you usually cannot see the airfilter. The only drawback to a cold air intake,... is because it's in a lower position... there a risk of sucking up water when you drive over a puddle. A "splash" wont really do anything but a deep puddle where the enginge can suck up a good amount of water. If you suck up water inside the engine you can hydrolock your motor...which will F@%K up your engine. But to remedy this problem just get a bypass valve..so when the filter gets dunked into water then the engine will suck air through the valve which is located higher and away from water.

On a cold winter day or night you cant really feel the difference. But on a hot summer day you might feel a difference.

Same, except the K&N will be leaps and bounds more expensive then a cheap intake kit. I don't even know if the K&N comes with a pipe of any kind. Just a filter and maybe a spacer...could be wrong though...get a cheappy though, its just as good.


PSST: Intakes just don't matter that much, other than the usual cold air vs short ram, but thats more because of the pipe design, and not the filter itself.
