Default Keyless entry on a 98 EX Civic

I want to install the factory keyless entry system on a EJ6 EX. I know the HU has the keyless receiver unit built in. What other modules and harness are required to enable this system. Is there a how-to somewhere?

Thanks,
BM

If the car does not have power doorlocks, it will be way cheeper and easier to to it with aftermarket parts. 94

actually, you're wrong. If he has an EX the head unit should already be the one with the keyless built in. The best way to tell? Look between the FM/AM button and the TAPE/CD or whatever the button under the FM one says on yours. It looks like there's a little plastic "hump" to seperate the two buttons... that isn't actually a plastic hump, it's the programming button. If it's there, then you're radio is already equipped (like I said being an EX it should already be equipped).

All you have to do is go to Honda, buy the remote(s), and program them. Programming them isn't hard either, the directions can be found online. IIRC the remote runs like $40~$60 just like an aftermarket remote.

Hey rj thats for the great response.

Yes its a 98 EX with power locks, power windows, cruise, etc and it even has a factory tape deck near the cup holders connected to main audio unit with a DIN cable. I checked the radio and the programming button is there between the AM/FM and CD/TAPE.

I had bought this car new from a dealer here in Toronto, Canada back in 1998. At the time the dealer said that on a 1998 EX keyless was an option and it would cost $650 CAD to install.

From yr post it seems all I need is the Honda transmitter and program the receiver built into the factory HU. WOULD THIS BE CORRECT? Is there any other module other than the auto power door lock actuators that needs to be added? Is the security module included in the HU?.

Why was the SOB dealer asking for so much $$$ just if I needed a $40-$60 remote

Thanks in advance for yr knowledgable responses.

The security is an add on unit... that would run additional and mounts into the grove in your radio (if you look at the top of your factory radio you'd get what I mean). There is also a green plug taped back behind your radio.. that's the harness where some of the alarm functions can be found (so if you ever try to install a DIY alarm kit you can find some of the wire you'd need there).

The keyless is built into that radio, and you shouldn't need anything else to get it to work. There are 3 plugs on the backside of your radio.. a white plug which has all the power and audio connections for your radio... another black plug which is either round or a smaller rectangle which runs to the tape deck down below, and a green plug, which is the plug for the keyless. It also has 2 wires in it for your dome light. This is why if you ever want to replace your radio with an aftermarket and keep your keyless entry working you'll have to use a Metra 1720T style harness that keeps power to the old radio, and also leave that green plug plugged in. The factory radio gets stashed in the lower section of your dash.
