ur friend either got the usdm b16a2 or the jdm b16, if what the guy said is correct ur friend got the b16 sir2 which is the jdm b16 which is only labeled as b16 in the block. one way u can tell if it is the sir2 is if the Dohc is in bigger letters than the vtec letters, on the sir i think the vtec letters are bigger than the dohc letters.

what if ur only buying the block and u have no valve cover as a reference??

look at the year of the head, at the exhaust ports, should have the year there.
should say 30 by the vtec sol.
the engine should have grey plugs

If its just the block, the JDM SiR-2 block should say "P30" on the tops of the pistons, I beilive there should be a date stamp some where on the block, and the SiR-1 blocks come with an oil cooler. The USDM Blocks should say B16A2 right on um and should have a VIN # at the front of the block on a green placard.
But as far as the whole motor goes its real easy to tell the differnce, The Manifold is totaly differnt, the header is differnt, the distributor is differnt, at the front of the head there is a date stamp witch should have a date that is 92 and up and vise versa for the SiR-1 motor.
Best of Luck,
James

Sir is 10.2:1 compression...i think the OBD1 B16A is 10.4:1
