Default bad thermostat?

hey guys, i noticed my fan wasn't coming on in my b16a crx. so i just put a toggle switch inbetween the two wires and after letting it warm up for a sec i just turn on the fan until i get done with the car (i haven't really drove it more than 2 or 3 miles yet.) but i was wondering if just by seeing that my fan was still good (putting the toggle switch inbetween the two lines) did that mean i had a bad thermostat. can you hook the wires up wrong on the thermostat sensor by chance? is there something else i should try before resorting to buying a new thermostat? if so should i go honda oem on this part or is any autozone/oreily thermostat going to work for this job. thanks guys.

thermostat sensor? what do you mean by that cuz the thermo by itself isnt electrical..yeah you should replace it if you can or if its old and get oem(do not get autozone stuff if possible)..i have a b16 in my bucket as well and my fan isnt working i think i have a problem with that sensor on the back of the block with the 2 prongs(connectors) on it(either its bad or wires are mixed up) is that the sensor your talking about?

The fan switch your probably talking about is the heat temp switch which are known for going bad that is the switch that turns on you fan when the engine gets to that temp. If your fan wasnt comming on it is prolly cause of that. If you hooked up you fan correctly with a toggle (meaning it comes on) and it still overheats the it is prolly gonna be the thermostat. In whick the best to replace it with would be an oem one.

your fan is on;y going to come on if your stopped and you have been running it hard. think about it. if you driving you getting your engine cooled by all that air coming threw the front of your car....

i had the same problem of thinking my fan was broken and ****....i never worried about it, and i never had any problems like over heating. if u want u caould also replace ur thermostat but i wouldn't worr y about it

i was really just paranoid, i don't want anything to happen to my rex, especially problems from overheating. so thats why i just went ahead and put the toggle switch in. ive really just been able to drive like 2 or 3 miles and run it hard enough to engage vtec about 5 times in those short runs then i would let it sit for roughly 5 min before shutting her down. would that be enough to actually warm it up to operating temps? i was just worried cause after those short runs my fan wasn't turning on. in fact my temp gauge never even makes it to the half way mark. so am i right in thinking that my thermostat could actually still be good and its just my fan switch is bad?

my uncle suggested that i remove the thermostat, hook up a multimeter to it, put it in some boiling water, and watch the temp till about 210 and see if it lets any current go through. i just thought if you could by pass your sensor and make the fan turn on then you just had a bad thermostat. but now i see that what we are talking about is two separate things. correct? does this sensor work on polarity?

i was also thinking about the mugen/spoon thermostat, but i heard that it makes it harder for your engine to actually reach the operating temperature. i guess you would have to constantly run it hard to ever reach it, which you probably wouldn't want to do all the time. i guess it is really just meant for more of a race application.

you could put the thermostat in boiling water and see if it opens up,but doing that sometimes will deform the gasket area unless you could hold it in the water without it touching the bottom of the pan...next time you run the motor feel the upper/lower rad hoses and see which one or both get warm, that will let you know if the thermostat is stuck or working..so do the obd0 b16's have a thermoswitch? where is it? what sensor is the one on the back with the 2 prongs coming out of it?

if im not mistaken my old hf motor had the two prong thing on the back of the block, but being that my motor is obd1 (don't know if that has anything to do with it, or if it is just because it is a b series motor vs the d series) i had to cut the wires for that two prong connector and hook up a regular clip off my b16a harness to use instead. my b16a didn't have the sensor you are talking about on the back of it, just the oil and knock, if im not mistaken.

if the bottom hose doesn't feel like it has pressure that means bad thermo right, if both are pressurized then the thermo is good? just making sure.
