Default What will divert power away when a motor is fully extended to stop damage?

I don't know how to word this, but here's my best shot. I'm asking in here because you guys that are familiar with wiring will hopefully know exactly what I'm talking about.

On say an OEM power window setup. When you push the switch to roll the window up and the window gets all the way to the top, what diverts the power away from the motor so that the motor doesn't continue to churn?

Something keeps power away from the motor because the motor doesn't even go....something diverts or bypasses the current.

What does that? How can I wire something like that into a circuit?

I need something to divert power away from a motor when the motor has met it's full extension, as to avoid damage to the motor but that will allow the current to return if the switch is flipped the OTHER way (i.e. up and down).

What am I looking for!? Is this something I can buy, or something I can do with the wiring to achieve this?

latching relay and a pair of lilmit switches....limit switches will tell the relay to cut the power, relay will control the motor via a momentary switch.

Okay, that makes sense.

Is there a way to wire that up in conjunction with an OEM style switch?

Here's a little in-depth discussion of what exactly I'm trying to do:

yeah, if it's a momentary switch it will apply signal to the relay, that will trigger 12V to the motor in the proper direction...until it hits the limit switch...

So all I need to add in is a limit switch?
