Starting to weld. Which welder?
Im looking on ebay to get an idea what the prices are..
Well, heres the deal. Ive welded some exhaust and such before. But only used an arc welder... Im interested in fabbing up some of my own stuff... Like maybe manifolds and stuff once i learn..
So my question to the Fabb guru's
What welder should i get? I dont need professional 5000$ pieces...
Whats an affordable welder that will get the job done..
Edit: Does this one look okay?

Id get a MillerMatic 135...Ive used it to weld whole frame rail back on civics. Its a 110v welder...has infinate controls for voltage(cheaper welders do not)..great welder..expect to pay around $500-$600 for the welder, cart, and argon mix tank..
Lincoln has good welders as well as hobart.

Dear god i can see that this topic will ultimately be the down fall of the welding/fab page of Honda-tech. but ill go ahead a beat a dead horse. Lincoln, Miller, Hobart, CK systematics, ESAB just to name a few, are all wonderful welding companies. comparing all of them to each other is like comparing Nissan, acura, honda, toyota; everyone will have their reasons why they like what they like or don't like. Do your self a favor search online, read everything, wait for the best price or go to local fab shops and see what they are using and what they paid for them. But remember a fab shop will need a bigger welder ( higher amp) then you will probably ever need, so be careful not to over buy! good luck.
Im sorry i didnt mean to start any drama.... Was just looking for a suggestion on a welder than i can easily learn on and then actually do really good work on..
Are those two i posted not good?

Nor was I just looking to see why linconl is ****, other than words with no facts... Thats like saying all euros suck with no supporting facts to why you think they do.

its nice to have. Infinate voltage control is important to me as well. its nice to have. with "clicker" style adjustments you might have too much voltage and burn through or not enough to get a good weld imo. A good welder could get around this problem but if your a begininer its a good idea to get one with infinate settings. Also you probably only need a 110v welder since you be using it in your garage. Just check out the Miller 135 and I believe the Lincoln 135(with infinite settings) and youll be ok

Exact same welder, cheaper and you get free shipping. The ebay seller is probably just charging shipping and getting it drop shipped from Harbor Freight. lol.
BTW, that welder sucks *****. I just bought one last week and I would not do it again.
It's nearly impossible to lay a bead...all it does is produce splatter. There's a few guys on here who say that it's decent, and have gotten a decent job out of it. Maybe I'll ask them for a few pointers.

cheap welders are imposible to fix almost or get parts for when they brake. I was advised to just get a good welder or dont get one at all. For small use I swear by the miller matic 135. Its the welder I pretty much learned on and its a very good 110v welder. I also learned on Hobart 220 and those are good as well so I assume they make nice smaller ones. Also keep in mind that you do not want to use whimpy extension cords when welding. Try to use the plug in the wall. If you need to stretch across and need a extension cable use a very good one. Dont leave it coiled up. Use a good ground as close to work as possible and make sure your using the right wire and use argon mix for most stuff. If you messed any of that up you could get mediocre welds and it wont be the welding machines fault
i really love the Hobbart Handler 140 Mig, i have one here and it's practially a Miller. just plug that baby to your washer plug (which is 20AmP) and weld away. it can penetrate 1/4 steel like cheese
I think I'm gonna buy this one
