Default Ignition timing Q's on 89 Civic hatch SOHC 16valve.

Alright I have my manual and I have the timing adjust dealie jumped w/ a wire.
Dizzy is loosened and my timing light is standard w/out a **** on the back.
On the initial check of the the timing light on the flywheel the pointer isnt lining up with any of the marks.
The are not color coded either.
I can only see 2 marks on the flywheel aswell.
I turned the dist. counter clockwise , which is advancing i believe, and I still cant get it to line up with the 1st notch.
Im not familiar with Hondas , I mostly work on VW's so any help would be great.
Oh yes , the reason why I am doing the timing is that the car was pinging BADLY upon acceleration in ALL gears . but just cruising at constant speed no ping.
Thanx

the marks look like this right.

i believe they are..

18 BTDC, 16, 14, TDC you are trying to get 16, or the middle mark of the 3 for Stock timing.

make sure the motor is fully warmed up when doing this too.

Thanx for someone finally responding I was starting to worry that the only thing people on this site cared about was how cool there CAI sounded and what size rear spoiler they could get on a hatch.
Im at work so Ill look at the marks after, thanx again.

Alright ,
I have the test plug jumped with a wire.
I have the three bolts loosened.
I have my timing light hooked up.
I still cant get the pointer to line up with the marks on the flywheel.
The marks are to the right of the pointer by about 1".
Im at a loss.
Anybody wanna buy a civic???
For real!!

well you should have the light pointed at the crank pulley not the flywheel..

with the car off see if you can find the marks on the pulley..

and double check to see if your clipped to the right spark plug wire..

Yes I have the #1 wire connected to the light.
I also am looking at the correct pulley , the crank pulley , it has three small marks that are side by side indicating 14 , 16 , 18 degrees.
I also have a Haynes manual.
I have worked on ALOT of VW's but this is my first Honda .
Im getting frustrated and dont want it to be my last , but.....................Help?

Please explain how a dist. cap can throw off your timing?

Spring loaded ground inside cap was not engaging the dist correctly , therefore I was getting a inconsistent spark.
Once I replaced the cap w/new one and then aimed the timing light , timing was on.
