Please don't flame me yet, I did do a search and found nothing to help me with my problem.
I have a 1995 GS-R sedan with about 58,000 miles. I had the 60,000 mile service done at 56,000 miles. I just check the oil and found that I'm a quart low. ( the oil stick shows the level at the lower dot)
From all the research I've done so far via the search here on Honda Tech.com, I couldn't find any information on 5w-50 Castro GTX full synthetic. If I shouldn't be using 5w-50, could I add a quart of 5w-30 or 10w-30 Castro GTX full synthetic?
Could some one chime in on why the mechanic would chose 5w-50 and could this weight oil do the engine any harm? I live in the Sacramento area, so it doesn't get really cold out here, but, it does get hot in the summer.
I've been lurking here at Honda-Tech.com since I brought my 95 GS-R back in Dec of 2003. But as you can see it's my first post, thanx in advance...
TQ

The 5-50 should be fine, but I'd change it after 3k miles. I hear that whatever it is that makes oil have a larger "spread" between the numbers, 5-50 instead of 5-30, breaks down quickly or something. I'm no expert, but I wouldn't worry too much over it.
the 5W-50 will probably burn up more faster than the 5w-30. thats probably why ur oil was low. i have 5w-30 in my car and it burns up oil a little bit. i have to add about 1/2 to 1 quart of oil after about 2K miles.
and u only have 58000 miles on a 95 integra???? damn, u dont drive it too much do u?

I'm glad to hear that the 5w-50 will not harm my engine.
Next question; would it harm my engine or could there be any adveres effect to add 5w-30 to the 5w-50 without changing out the oil filter and oil?
Would there be a problem mixing the two different weight oils, or as TurnerNoob mentioned, will I need to change oil and oil filter out at three thousand miles.
Second question; As I mentioned in my earlier post, I live in the Sacramento area. Which of the two recomended oils would be ideal to ues 5w-30 or 10w-30?
Even though my car is just about ten years old, is has very low milage. (little over 58,000)
Boosedk20, no I don't drive if I don't have to. I have a 04 WRX wagon that I dirve more often. The GS-R does get some driving time up to Tahoe and San Francisco when my lady has use of the WRX...
Peace
TQ

i think its fine mixing 5W-30 to 5W-50 sometimes if u really really need to add some, and once in a while.. its better than running low or no oil... btw after u finish ur 5W-50 dont mix it anymore....

Does some one know for sure that I can add a quart of 5w-30 to 5w-50 that's alraedy in the egine without causing any adveres affect or harm to the engine?
Please help a fellow TEG person, I was planning to take the TEG into San Franicsco today...

castrol syntec 5w-50 will be fine for your car. the 5w-50 will not burn faster than oils of other viscosities. the difference in the spread of the sae viscoity grade matters more when you are using conventional oils. when using synthetics you really dont have to worry about the difference between the two numbers.
and it will be fine if you mix 5w-30 with 5w-50.

Thank you all for coming to my aid with such quikness. I'll try to find some 5w-50 Castro GTX Synthetic, if not I'll put some 5w-30 till I get my oil changed at 3,000 miles.
It takes a load off my mind, to know I can depend on the good folks at HONDA-TECH.COM for some friendly advise.
Now, if I can figure out how to post a few pix of my lil ole 95 TEG I'd be "In Like Flint!" O'well, that's a whole other thread...
