Default Tranny question for the motor.

Why does EVERY A$$ hole bickers about the LS tranny being dramatically long.... I know the tourque is not all there to guide along the gearing.... but what happens if the car is a lil bit lighter... like say an EF? Is it THAT huge of a difference... from 2-3 points away? I am comming from a VW prospective..... I have had 4 VR6's and a 2 litter..... and all had TQ.... and LONG gear ratios. So the TQ had taken car of the gearing.... has any one tested the difference with a B16 with B16 tranny... and then a LS tranny.... let me know...

Thanks

Mike

And every *** hole on this board will tell that a b16 is better and you should go out and do your own test and tell every *** hole on this board what they already know.

i would also like to know. how much would the b16/itr gearing take off compared to the gs-r tranny 1/4 mile wise. if someone has an estimate.

It makes a world of difference! The B16/ITR revs so much quicker!

depending on what vr6 you had take a coraddo or gti/jetta vr6 they all had a 3.67 r&p take that trany out and put in a passat trany 3.38 r&p...its a huge diffrance the passat trany takes way to long even with the nice vr6....trust me i have had both tranys and then swaped in a 4.24 r&p talk about shifting fast....that was an example for him mybe he would understand it better becuse his coming from vw....now an ls trany on an ls is not that bad its got more tq, but if you put a b16/itr trany on it its alot more fun high tq and short gears kick ***, now to answer youe question i could not even think about putting an ls trany on a b16 theres no tq with the b16 as it is. thats why every *** hole on here says it sucks....oh and use the search button it works very good

Ask anyone who has done this swap and they will most likely tell you the same. This is pretty much fact.

I went from
LS engine and transmission
to LS engine and B16 transmission

the difference was night and day, acceleration was much better, and the gearing was much more suited to the track, now i just need a little more rpms

ive also found that ls trannys dont hold up as well. ive blown 2 ls trannys. in both of them the differential simply shattered from abuse. never had that happenn on my b16 trannys and they get stomped on just as much if not more.

I wouldnt say that, the B16 tranny is pretty weak as well! I shattered the differential in both the LS and B16 trannys, however GSR and ITR trannies are made a bit stronger and can take the abuse! Havent ran into any problems with these trannies yet!

peakier powerbands require shorter gears(especially the b16). torquey engines like the LS have a broader torque range..that's why they can handle longer gears. That's not to say the LS will not be quicker with a B16 tranny.

I beg to differ, hydro trannies are totally different and I think the cable trannies are different as well! The B16 and B17 trannies are exactly the same but I believe the LS is still a 4.29 dif. All 1st gears are the same in B16 trannies, but from 2nd gear on they are different!

i can see u dont read very well. i said "diff" not ring gear, big difference. ring gear affects final drive ratio and i know the B16 has a 4.40 and the LS have 4.29s. as i said, DIFF not ring gear/final drive.

i demolished my ls diff, and was only running 14.8@94, but it was at an importmix night race at pacific raceways.. ran about 17 times, never doing that again. they were in a row. i guess you learn from your own mistakes. i had pictures but lost somewhere.. a few teeth missing.

hmm.. i wish i could have ran the ls with a b16 trans.. damn vtec hatches running low 14's while i was at 14.8, couldn't beat them.

also my friend with a 90 DA, ls.. put a b16 trans on his car and ran 15.4, almost stock.. previosuly with the ls transmission he was running 16's
