I've noticed at loud click at 4400rpm when vtec engages and again when rpms drop past 4400 (vtec disengaging, I guess). Is this a problem? How can i fix it?

I'm pretty sure thats just the cam sliding over. Have you driven in friends vtec cars and it's still unique to yours?

 

I haven't been in anyone else's car that does this. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this.

cams don't do any sliding. The only time I've heard a pronounced clicking at VTEC is when I had my ECU chipped to engage and disengage VTEC at the same exact RPM. Only then did it click whenever engaging and disengaging. Pretty annoying.

 

Cam sliding over? What are you talking about?

 

I still have the stock ECU, and I don't notice it everytime...Could it be anything with the solenoid?

Lol cam sliding over! Yes the hydraulic lifters are moving the cam into vtec!

Psshh! When I wan' the Vtak to HIT I get out 'der and push the damn cam over ma'self!

 

check your oil, it may be that you have insufficent pressure due to oil being low. the only time i experienced clicking at vtec was when i had a Fields controller in my last integra and it used to fugg up every now and then and reset its self leaving teh vtec coming in at around 2500rpm, so basically every time i drove the car, no matter how slow or at what speed i'd get a loud clicking at that point, took me ages to figure out what it was the first time it happened. When i did realise what was happening i put it down to that at 2500rpm there wasnt sufficient oil pressure in the oil runner for the sliders and the clicking was more pronounced due to lack of oil at those rpms.

I hear a rattle noise at around 3,000 rpms in my '95 gsr, and I've heard the same noise in my friends 96 gsr at 4400 rpms. I was told from another friend who has a '99 gsr that it was the headers making that noise. The '99 gsr doesn't have the problem because it only has about 60k miles and they probably fixed it in that model. It probably has something to do with vtec because my vtec starts around 3100 rpm obd1, and my friends '96 vtec starts around 4400 rpm obd2. (i'm not sure about the accuracy on that, just from previous experience)

To verify, do you have an aftermarket header and it's still making that noise?

I used to have a '94 gsr and it made the same exact "rattling" noise at 3,000rpm. I don't believe it's the vtec because vtec sounds different when it actuates. It's almost like a popping noise and it accentuates if you have an exhaust systems. With an exhaust it sounds like it pops and the muffler gets a few decibals louder.

When I had my '94 gsr, I had straight piping (no cat) 2 1/4 piping to a single chamber flow master muffler,. It was ghetto style back in the day, but so loud it scared the **** out of people in tunnels/overpasses. vroOOOH-BAAAAAHH!!! seriously thats how the vtec sounded.

My friends explaination of the headers say that the way the GSR headers are designed they have inner piping within the exhaust manifold. It's restriction because of strict US emission laws. Once the inner piping breaks, it starts to rattle, possibly at vtec, since when vtec kicks in it makes your exhaust louder and work harder.

I'm going to put some DC headers on very soon and verify this. Can anyone else, from experience, verify this?
