Default D4 light flashing constantly, probably tranny related

Hi every body,

I'm having that strange problem with my 1994 Honda Accord EX, CDN model (with a F22B2 engine). Sometimes when trying to start up the car, my D4 light is flashing constantly. I then have to cancel the ignition, wait and start over after between 30 seconds to 5 minutes. It then starts ok. As long as the D4 light flashes, it's like no fuel and/or no sparks are coming to the motor. When the D4 is not flashing, the motor is cranking and starting normally, but then stops like there's no more fuel in the tank. If I push the gaz pedal fast enough, it will catch back and remain started. In any ways, after 5 minutes of "do nothing" and turning my fingers, it always starts.

I read the codes by shorting the SCS switch 2 weeks ago. The D4 light gave me 4 codes: 1, 8, 13 and 14. I then thought that this was the ECU code, so I made some testing and cleaning with the IAC valve. I also changed the Ogygen Sensor and the fuel filter. That last one (tough job) was expected since very long, so I tought it would solve the problem. The car engine is doing a lot better since, but the "D4 flash" problem is still there.

I then finally realized by reading some honda-tech postings that the D4 light was for the tranny, and not the EFI system. I made another SCS reading yesterday (after a system reset and some driving), and there was no code anymore.

I would need some help to interpret all this, because I don't know much about automatic transmissions. I'm tired of spending my time searching in the shop manual and on Internet for some clues. It's the first time I work on that "thing", it's a black hole to me.

Some potential symtoms:
-my transmission is hard to shift from Park to any other speed
-it is rought when it changes the speed
-there is a little too much oil in it since 5 years, about half an inch on the stick reader (I will correct this this weekend) because of me, I'm guilty
-I'm the type of guy that always put the tranny to neutral when I wait on a red light

Someone have any suggestions?

Thanks to all.

I think you finally got to understanding it... You reset it & you have to wait for the problem to come back & set a code again. For a flashing CEL you look in one list, for a flashing D4 you look in a different list of error codes.

For my '98, the Helm shop manual has a real good list of codes, & the tranny codes are together in the same list as the CEL codes. So you look in the fuel & emmissions chapter. I don't know whether that's the same for '94...

(Incidently, its the same for ABS codes, too. They have their own list.)

It's in a completelly different chapter. It's not giving me much information yet, because the codes are not coming back, even if the car had the problem once since I did the resetting. Also, the tranny codes are harder to understand then the ones for the fuel system. I'm trying to find some relations between them and the symptoms, but for the moment I'm scratching my head more than anything else.
