Default bouncing idle until warmed up... ideas anyone?

Hey there, I've got a 96 accord EX (2.2 sohc vtec) and recently have been having a bouncing idle at start up. It levels out to around 800 after about 5 min of driving. I swapped out the idle air control motor on the back of the manifold, and that wasnt it. Ive heard it could be the coolant sensor. Has anyone had this same problem, and if so, what are some possibilties? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Fast idle valve. usually on the underside of the throttle body.

sounds like the culprit. Take off you throttle body and collant hoses. After that I think its like 3 bolts or screws that hold it on.

i looked up the fast idle valve in my haynes manual, ran the test that it said to do, which was basically covering up the port in the throttle body to see if it stalled. There is still air flowing through the thing and according to the manual its working fine. I would like for this to be the problem, instead of a cracked head gasket, which the manual said could be the problem, and one of my buddies said IS the problem. Could that be the problem? and is there any way to test it out without rippin off the head and inspecting it visually? thanks

If its cracked enough to affect your idle then youre probably losing compression. Do a compression test.

dont waste time with compression, do a leakdown test. that will tell you for sure if its the HG.

i still say its the FITV, a headgasket problem dosent just go away when the car warms up.

just in case someone stumbles upon this thread, it was the fast idle valve. I took off the brass plate, screwed the white screw thing all the way down, put it all back together and the idle problem was gone.

Good deal!

We're glad you came back & said whether it was fixed or not & what the problem was. That makes this thread actually useful for someone who's searching...
