Poeple do mods to their cars, or build the engines up then take it to someone to get tuned.

What exactly is involved with tuning, and why do you have to take to someone to get done for you?

Searching the archives of this board will help you understand a lot of it.

Tuning is essentially dialing a desireable air/fuel ration across the operating RPM of the engine.

While doing this you can change cam gear settings, fuel pressure, timing, fuel and timing "tables" if you have hondata, AEM EMS, etc...

THis accomplished on some sort of dyno which measures horsepower at the hubs or wheels depending on dyno type. Air fuel is reached by using a wide band O2 sensor that gives a digital read out.

Fuel pressure, air fuel ratio, cam timing, ignition timing, VTEC X over.

I get it done for me because i know someone who has been doing it for years can get more power and driveability out of it than i can, and that is the ultimate objective isnt it?

when a car is fully tuned lets say at sea level, can you drive anywehre at any elevation and the ecu will compensate for elevation/airtemp and other factors like the factory ecu?

So could I attempt to tune my own car without a dyno, or is the dyno necessary?

I thought the ECU controlled ignition timing, so how is that tuned?

I tried doing a search but I dont understand a few things that were being said, like what is Hondata and AEM, and what do they do for you?

Thanks guys
