Default 1987 Honda Accord LX-i Hatch Back Tranny issue

As you can see by the topic, that is my car. It has had tranny issues since a couple of years ago. But as of last week, the tranny now REFUSES to change gears automatically (Automatic Transmission). I added new fluid, and it was futile. I think it finally gave up after over-reving the engine to nearly 4 RPMs before first gear could kick in, it finally said... no more changes! When I start driving, I reach 38 MPH right before it red lines (I never red line it). It doesnt shift. I have been quoted nearly 700 bucks to rebuild the tranny but I want to do it myself. Problem is, I am not a transmission expert or a real good Honda Savvy But what I would REALLY like to know is if someone can give me their opinion as to what is the most economic way to get the car running normal again. Should I pay to have it rebuilt? or do it myself. I would REALLY like to do it myself, I love learning new things when it comes to cars. If anyone on this board has the God Given patience to explain to me a few critical things before I dismount the tranny and begin workin on it. I live by several transmission parts distributors so getting parts is no issue. If anyone can give me any advice in any way, I would appreciate it, thanks!

well one thing i can say is doing it your self can never be done cause you wont know what to do .... you will need a secound hand that knows how to do it and he can guide you with him doing anything .... i know this cause i used to own the same car you have .... i have a full story but to long to explain ... but my car had a transmision leak and i didn't have any money to get any fluids and the fluids i had would only last me a week ... it was a pretty bad leak so until that it didn't want to shift like yours was doing i put it on d3 so it wout **** to the 4 th gear (i don't know if you tried this but it wont hurt to try) from there on i had a automatic-stick lol. cause i had to move from d4 t0 d3 and sometimes to 2 ... my reverse was gone so i had to park on hill un till i started to put engine oil in it and it maid the reverse work (the reason why i used engine oil was cause i had to cash for it at the timebut anyway it took me one full day to take it out ... and trust me when i say this its a bitch ... its easy to chage the engine but the tranny ...

Thanks for reading Yes I tried ALL Gears... D2 D3 and D4 and its all the same... no shifting. I have a leak to. I have to put ATF every 2 or 3 days in the tranny. I was told my pressure switch or valve was broken. The ATF is costing me $ and that sux But if there is hope for fixing it myself... Im a fast learner, However I will not do it alone, I will try to get a guide. I refuse to pay the monstrous $700.00 unless I have no other choice... thats a 1987 with only 118 miles in it. The engine is perfect.

why would you think abotu rebiulding the tranny when you can get a used one for 250-350 ? we install used ones at my shop all the time and it isnt too hard to remove the tranny and install it yourself
