Default Motor Swap Legality in California?

I am thinking of doing a motor swap in my 97 Civic LX. It comes stock with the D16Y7 and I am thinking of swaping in a B16A1 . What kind of problems will i run into when I try to smog the car or even worse, get pulled over. Does the smog guy smog the car to the VIN number or the engine ID?

Need to go to a referree to have the motor certified. It needs to be the same year of the car, or newer. You need all of the correct, US spec smog equipment, no check engine light warnings, cat, 02, etc. It has to pass visually and by the numbers on the treadmill.

There's a few long threads on this in the EG forum, just use the search feature to get more in depth info and experiences.

damn Cali seems like its a problem to do anything to your car. here in jersey you can put any motor in any car no matter how it runs and just run it through the inspection. why are the laws so strict over on the westside?

Sometimes the air is so thick and polluted, it looks like you can cut it with a knife.

if u have a 97 LX u can't legely swap in a B16A1 the motor is older then the car, it's real hard to do that, u have to have a USDM Motor the same year or newer then the car, if u want a B16, no torque motor, just buy a B16A2 and a EX Wiring Harness, it will pass smog stock and can be Bared if u runing it 99-00 EX Harness and Run a 99-00 Si ECU, Full Stock Exhaust and Cat, Thorwing no codes and everything it setup the same way a 99-00 Si is stock.
U can always buy a DC Header and a AEM Intake, and get those bared as well, so if u get pulled over, show them u have bar legel mods.

i would never move to the east coast, to cold and i would much rather deal with earthquakes than ice storms. also i think even though they restrict the flow, cats are a good idea, the air is already nasty enough. swaping motors doesnt make your exhaust loud its those ricer grapefruit shooters they put on "screamin fat oval can"(most annoying commercial EVER). and yes they do pull us over and pop our hoods. but if your legal you can tell them to **** off . and back on topic, quad-damge is right, you cant do that swap legally without a lot of hassle. so try somthing else

Yea im alrdy up to 2 speeding tickets, 3 tickets for tinted windows in the front, Driving w/o proof of INS. but i do have INS., Exhibition of speed (which is bullshit charge), had a failure to appear but got that all cleared up. Actually tomorrow im going to court for the second speeding ticket. I got it in the beginning of the year. dont know why they put the court date so far away. but hopefully theyll let me go or go to traffic school cuz if they put this one on my record thats 3 points.

Well First of all if you plan to get past smog for a car that shouldn't get through, get to know people...

But anyways, I know someone whom had a RSX motor swap, and passed smog. Infact I'm planning to do a B16A swap and he is helping me out so i'll try to get info on smog. I have a 94 Civic DX swapping in a 92-93 B16A Integra Engine complete swap. We will see what smog says.
