*Noob ?* Manual Tranny Fluid?
yeahh this is kinda noob, lol what kind of transmission fluid do i use...? cause i heard you can just use like 10w-30 motor oil and it works just the same. but i dont wanna **** nothing up.

If you have grinds, use: regular 10W - 30 motor oil (I like Castrol GTX)
If you have a gem of a tranny: keep using Honda MTF
Rule of thumb: never use synthetic fluid in your tranny, ever!

You know... I was gonna let this slide, but you jumped on a bandwagon with out really knowing anything about what you were saying.
Honda uses and recommends either 10w 30 or MTF.
Look in any book it will tell you.
Research owns joo.

i've used synthetic in my tranny, to no ill effects. .RJ has some theories about conventional MTF's vs. synthetic MTF's in road race applications, and says quite the opposite.
personally i don't see why one would be different from the other if they're rated to the same viscosity and you're just daily driving.

Warning to you: PLEASE don't put motor oil in a transmission, it does NOT go there. Tranny fluid is closer to a 85W, and oil is closer to a 30W, so does that really sound like itd work? The viscosity is NOT the same, so please don't **** it up with the wrong fluid, Id rather you not have problems. You are best with Honda MTF. If you wanna try different, or are having grinding synchros, many people rave about GM Synchromesh, look into it.
thanks, but like i said...my cousin uses 10-w30 in his civic and it works fine, and i have heard it can be used. But i just wanted to make sure casue i just replaced my clutch and everything so i drained all the fluid. Ill probably go pick up some Honda MTF or Synromesh. Thanks guys!
okay, i know i asked this question cause i didnt know, but how are some other people claiming to use it and being fine, but you yet claim it to be so terrible for the tranny. One guy claims honda even prefers to use 10w-30...and ive looked it up and in one of the online prelude manuals...it says you can use 10w-30. So i dunno, im goin to buy some tranny fluid but...i wouldnt go to the extent of sayin its bad for the transmission if people are using it, and being fine with it.
For a new and great shape motor, yeah it can work. May not be the best, and it isn't. Its a substitute. And if you're havin any problems at all, dont risk it. Honestly, its worth the piece of mind, and these people with motor oil may not be revving the engine fast, or racing, or any of that fun stuff. Chances are, their motor may not go the usual 300,000 miles a Prelude is expected. Or the 750,000 Miles that prelude motor went to the guy in California....
10W-30 is fine, but Honda MTF is only 2 or 3 bucks a qt. If you can get to the honda dealership then use Honda MTF.
Redline96LX:, Honda MTF is not 85W its 30W which is why you can use regular 10W-30 motor oil without any problems. ( Regardless of driving conditions. )
Honda MTF has other additives, etc., that regular motor oil doesn't. Which is why its recommended, but not neccesary.

read it again..
Look in cars that were delivered before MTF came out...
oh .. whats this say in my HELMS... 10W30... Well Ill be damned..

Its 80W according to the GL-4 scale, not the SAE engine oil viscosity scale.
70w80 falls some where between 5w30 and 10w30, just make sure you get SG, SH or SJ grade motor oil
Seriously, you people that are saying "Never use oil in your manual tranny" should really try to do some research before ever typing any advice again.

Very well said! Yes Honda does recommend that you use 10W30! Yes ONLY SG, SH or SJ grade as he said ^^^
Mobil 1 is fine if you don't want synchros. You will have to rev match EVERY shift. It doesn't allow enough friction for the synchros to work the way they are designed.
I prefer not to use motor oil! I use the Synchromesh because I started to get grind in 5th gear... I have used the synchromesh for about 50k miles now. I still have no grind any any gear and it shifts smooth as anything. I have 226K miles on this tranny now! If you have no grind I would use either the synchromesh or Honda MTF! If you have low miles on the tranny Motor oil is fine! Don't use some shitty stuff like Quaker state or whatever it's called. I know you can use Mobil but NEVER synthetic motor oil. Synthetic MTF is a completely different animal than the motor oil.

This is realted to this issue I guess, but I just changed my tranny fluid to Penzoil Syncromesh. The same as the GM kind because on the bottle it says for GM motor cars and what not. The 3rd gear grinding has stopped, but much to my dismay the tranny has started leaking. I thought it was I didnt tighten the drain bolt enough but I tightened and it is still leaking. I got under there and the oil is pretty much all over the tranny. Can I use a thicker viscosity oil to see if that helps the leak? or is there some kind of "stop leak" for manual tranny?
No you don't want a thicker oil and NEVER use any of those stop leak products. They work by putting a "sealer" in there that sort of sticks to everything and is supposed to build up around the leak. They are last resort fixes or for people who don't care about their cars...
Find the leak... Clean all that **** off the trany and check it every day! See where it is coming from. It might not even be your tranny fluid. It could be a bad oil-pan gasket (I know all too well) it can build up on the bottom of the bell housing.
There are very few places that it can leak out so it should be a pretty easy diagnostics.
