Default Schumacher retiring?

...after this year. Interesting news should it prove to be true. I would think that every driver would be clamoring to get into this open seat...

I don't think he'll do it--he's still dominant. Why leave when you are still the top contender?

Someone posted this on another forum, they said it was from Atlas F1:

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">But Schumacher's decision to call a press conference four days after the event had encouraged rumours on various websites and reputed publications that the 35-year old German might be announcing his retirement.

"I heard the rumours but they are not true - there will not be any announcement. This is just a regular press conference," his press officer, Sabine Kehm, told Atlas F1. She further explained that Schumacher was not able to hold a press confernece on Sunday, after he clinched the record title, and wanted to allow a separate media meeting for that occasion. </TD></TR></TABLE>

Jeff Gordon sure would look good driving a Ferrari.

I don't think he'll leave. He has worked so hard to help get Ferrari to the top, why not do the same thing for another year.

Maybe. Then again, who knows.

That said, I think he's still got the itch to win - case in point: this past weekend @ Spa. He clinched his SEVENTH WDC title, but in the press conference remarked as how , even though he won an iconic chamionship, he wanted to have won the race and taken the championship with a win. He's still a competitor at heart; I think (in my own way) that he wants to unseat McLaren's record of 17 wins in a season.

Maybe he wants to retire at the top of his game, like Mark Donohue did the first time?

I agree. I don't think it'll happen...but I've been wrong before. Didn't think Mika would retire and I would have thought JV would have gotten a ride by now. I honestly don't think "stats" mean more to this guy than simply the joy and rush of winning. In that respect, I think he relishes a good fight with a competitor - ANY competitor - and misses his old duels with Mika.

Speaking of missing a racer, I miss Donohue.

Speaking of F1 seats, rumor has it that BAT has greatly upped the contract offered to Button for 2005, including better bonus pay-out, with guaranteed payments on time. Maybe he'll stick around after all to avoid the legal battle?
