Default Why do starters go bad? Any guesses?

I was just wondering why starters go bad. I understand parts get old and things malfunction. But is there some sort of prevention method that i can go about to ensure my starters longjevity? I just replaced my starter and i was wondering if maybe it was something i did. Probably not but what the heck maybe someone knows more than me. it's a 92 honda civic.

The only thing you really can do to help a starters longeviy is do not start the car while its running! The drive or the solenoid usually go bad.

Actually, wrapping your starter in a heat-resistant sleeve will help it last a long, long time. See, solenoids like the starter soilenoid are very prone to damage by heat and, since you can't get parts to rebuild a Honda starter (I've tried), the only way to help this to not happen is to prevent it with some kind of heat-resistance. If you have a long-tube header or turbocharger or exhaust leak, these things will all take life away from your starter. Wrap it up, plug the leaks and make sure the contacts are as clean as you can keep them and your starter should last for a long while.
