Default VTEC not wanting to kick in!!! HELP PLEASE!!!!

Ok, so here's my issue. I was running time checks on my car, a friend was driving it while i was testing his Mr.2 turbo... i like my prelude better. anyway its a 98 SH model with almost 90k on it. He was accelerating hard shifting from third to fourth but some how fucken hit 2nd. rpm shot to way over red!!! brrrrmmmm clutch in rpms drop let sit for a while. When i get back in to drive home seems fine no problems... few. But wait its been almost a month now and when I'm accel. in first mainly, when I hit Vtec at 5,600 RPM my engine acts as if i hit rev limit brrrrmmmm same sound and total loss of power. wont really do it in other gears other than my torque gears 1st and 2nd. I just purchased a new Apexi-Vtec controller with Fuel management. Scared to install for fear vtec is already fucked. has anyone had this problem before??? i was also thinking it might be a gas issue i was using shell V-Power 91 octane. I think that **** is crap. Runs a lil better with Conoco or good ole dougans patrolleum i want to switch it to 95 octane but im worried im gonna blow my h22. dont exactly have money for an engine swap at the moment

My lude did something similar at 6000 rpm but I ended up changing to a Hondata ecu before solving the issue. After switching to the Hondata I didn't have the problems anymore. We've all heard of limp mode, which I'm not sure what the cut off rpm is for P13 ecu's but you may have something that's not functioning properly. You didn't mention it throwing any codes or the check engine light. If you haven't driven it much yet, put some miles on it, some things take time for the ecu to pick up on. I know at the time that I was experiencing problems that my knock sensor, and VSS were not signaling the ECU properly.

Bent valves? Skipped a tooth on the T-belt? I doubt it's gas. I'm in Boulder, and use the V-Power fuel... No probs.

I've run from high rev 3rd to second on accident and floated all of my valves. Luckily, after an adjustmest, they were fine.

Is the noise you hear more of a tapping noise?

no, I'm not getting any knocking or tapping just a hard hard rev sound like im hitting rev limit! and i loose all power at that point. And no its never kicked my check engine light on which i know works ok cause i had an ehaust o2 sensor just go and it kicked it on. replaced, reset, light off.

A new ECU will help with the tuning to maximize power gains, but if your problem is mechanical or a sensor, a new ECU won't solve it. If you know someone that has a good ECU, drop it in, and see how your car runs. If it runs the same then you'll know your ECU is not a problem.
