Default Japanese Civic HB

Got a friend who just recently moved to Japan to teach English. They are giving him a 5th gen Civic hb (just like mine) as a loaner car to use. Although its way cooler because it's right side drive.

So, I was curious of the engine in it so I got him to look. I told him the general location to look and he came back with the letter/number combo - S48A 4149085.

Are the engine codes different from the U.S.? And any clues what this is the equivalent of?

It is possible he is looking in the wrong spot too. Not sure on this one.

Ok...so he just went and double checked but came up with D13B this time. That is still different than any engine I have heard of.

????
