MOTUL Gear 300 -- BAD
I just got back from my mechanics shop to have the trnasmission fluid changed. I went there planning on putting in the MOTUL Gear 300 due to conversations on this board and some recommendations. My mechanic, who is very trusted and has been working on Hondas for decades, refused to put it in and said it would damage the tranny and eventually lead to failure.
Just an FYI and another opinion for those thinking about changing tranny fluid.

the thing with mechanics. is that they always think that they are right.
did you ask him why he doesnt like motul?
has he done tests to compare results and whatnot?
Sometimes its internetesque in how they turn against a certain product. The mechanic near me likes this oil called synergyn and doesnt like redline at all. If I ask him why, he gives me some illogical answer and says that synergyne is the only oil he uses on his daily driver, and race car.
Well just because he has never tried redline, and sent each oil to a lab, he sure as hell isnt any expert on oils despite his mechanical knowledge.
Critical Thinking/Reasoning is a very useful lifeskill

Oh, COME ON! .RJ has 21620 posts where you can flame him in response to his posts. You don't need to flame him in topics where he hasn't posted. That's not fair.

Your mechanic has an opinion. The great thing about opinions is that inherently, they cannot be "wrong". Doesn't stop it from being stupid, non the less.
Motul makes some of the best automotive lubricants available. The idea that their tranny fluid would lead to a tranny failure is simply laughable.
edit: ftr I use redline.

yay, more bandwagon bullshit for rapid tranny failure with the GM syncrowear fluid.
getting back to OP, i'm curious why a mechanic would say such a thing...
then again, i spoke to a mechanic long ago who seemed to know everything and condemned synthetic motor oil because it destroys the gaskets.

what makes u said that gm synchromesh leads to a gearbox failure ??
what makes u said that gm synchromesh leads to a gearbox failure ??
GM synchromesh is a baid aid solution, if your synchros are fucked you need a rebuild no oil will fix it, so if the grinds stop with gm synchormesh, at one point, all hell can and will break lose in your tranny in due time.
There are many conclusions to this problem... first of all being how old your tranny is and how long has the current lube been building up gunk and all?
Sometimes when you input a new lube of a different kind, advanced or not, it can cause leaks and failures do to the properties contained within the more advanced lubes.
Take for an example lets say you have about 60-70K on your tranny and have been using honda mtl the whole time. Switching over to a more advanced lube will deteriorate the gunk build up from years of driving. Simply the detergents get rid of the bad stuff and the new stuff needs time lube properly. Thus causing trannies to go bad. Sometimes this can be fixed by simply flushing your transmission and refilling new fluid.

Jonathan, you should inform your mechanic that Honda MTF-II (sold in Japan) is a full synthetic. FWIW, I've used HKS FF Gear (similar to Motul Gear 300) for over 3 yrs w/o any problems.
