Default My power seems to be falling off at around 6800 to 7000 rpm?

What do you guys think about this? My car seems to just fall off at that point like I'm having problems with the fuel or something. The car is an 98 prelude,I have an Invidia exhaust, and short intake (not cai). I have about 101,000 miles on the car. My mechanic doesn't think its mechanical because he said it would do this all the time not just at these rpms. I haven' t ever changed the fuel filter but I'm the second owner but doubt they did either( bought the car at 68,000). Do you think this could be a possibility? Any other suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

If it was the fuel filter i think it would not depend what RPM you were really at.
You should check your air to fuel ratio and power on a dyno.
Though your peak power is prob before 7000 and decreases after that, it shouldnt be to noticeable if everything is working right.

Very well could be your fuel filter, sounds like it could be going leaner towards the top and thats why you are feeling like its falling off. Higher the RPM = more fuel. So even if that does not fix your problem, it is a good place to start. Also the regular maintanace; plugs, wires, cap, rotor, clean air filter. Good luck!

I have new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and a clean air filter. I have replaced my egr valve and a new o2 sensor(it had went bad and threw a code). I guess I'll replace my fuel filter ans see what happens.

He knows what he is talking about. The fuel pressure goes up at higher RPM's. If the filter is restrictive, the engine won't get enough fuel when it needs it.

It is a good start and needs to be done at your milage anyhoo.

How bad is the dropoff?

Did you think about the fact that the H22 stops making power above 7k?

aaaaaaaahahahahaha.....

Back on topic with real answers from people who know stuff....... Have you ever replaced your timing belt? If a timing belt tensioner is going bad, then it'll slack off on the top end and it feels like the car is just falling on it's face.

Ok, no... seriously. I was going to leave this alone, but I can't help it.

I'm a newbie at the whole Prelude thing, could you tell me where my "VTEC spool" is and what it looks like?

Had timing belt replaced and tensioner pulley. Oil is OK I know what you are talikng about when your low on oil. My GSR did that to me before. The guy at the shop cleaned my Vtec solonoid but said it wasn't too bad. I'm noticing black carbon I guess all over the back of the car. Hope my rings aren't bad. Almost seems like its running rich and not burning all the fuel. How could you tell if the rings are bad...Compression test?

Looking into so old threads I can see that the "soot" is coming from "most preludes run rich from the factory". Would running to rich make you bog out at top end?

yes, do a compression test and see what the numbers are.
Then put a cap full of oil in the cylinder and see if the numbers
jump up, if they do, more than likely your rings are fried.

"VTEC spool" is just how they refer to it on the honda parts diagrams so lay off this kid man. If you don't believe me, here's the link, go look for part #12

Ok not trying to beat this thing in the bush just tryin to explain what the heck this car is doing. I was getting on the highway today and was at wot in third soon as i get to 7000 the car is sputtering . You can definitly tell by the exhaust it is cutting out almost like its the rev limiter but its not, its something else.

sounds like a fuel problem. Change the filter it needs it anyways. It is more than likely not anything to do with the VTEC spool solenoid. And yes thats the real name so whoever thinks it is not is very wrong. If it was clogged then the right when it changes over it would feel like **** not gradually dropping off on the top end with one exception if you had a bad oil pump which would be tremendously doubtful. Honda oil pumps last pretty much forever and I've seen 1 fail ever and it was on a 300,000+ mile engine. More than likely fuel possibly the secondary runner closing down for some reason. You could check the IAB vacuum lines to cure that if indeed it is the problem. Have fun
