What weight oil should I use at the track?
I am still using Mobil 1 5-30W for my GSR with an oil cooler and I am curious should I up the viscosity since the car no longer runs daily in the cold winters, etc? What weight oil are others using? Thanks!

What do you have to base this on?

I'm using 10w40 Mineral.
Wondering if I should tried some Synthetic, since when I'm on the track, the oil is seeing 260°F,pretty constantly.(Shift point is 8.5k)
Engine is a Spec-R(stock) w/a double core rad from a 'Teg and the oem oil cooler...

Racing = Higher temps, and requires a higher viscosity rating to maintain the proper viscosity for the temps you're using.
I'd recommend a 10w40 or 15w50 synthetic. IMHO.
FWIW, I use 0W30 Castrol syntec (german made real synthetic not the fake synthetic sold most places) and its much closer to a 10w40 than a 0w30. Available at autozone....

You know, Castrol also has a 10W60 racing oil, Castrol TWS Motorsport 10W/60. Might be a good option for hot summer days.
Have used it myself for two trackdays now this month and it looks to do the job very well, car burns no more oil than during normal daily driving. I'm normally using TXT Softec Plus 5W/30 btw.

why would 0W30 Castrol Syntec be any different than other weight Syntec? Castrol Syntec is all processed from organic, thus not "real" synthetic.

Autozone, same price as any other syn oil. Just a bit harder to find - and my UOA's have come out looking very good

I wish I could get the 10w40 weight of what I use

All the stuff made in the US is - Not the stuff made in Germany, which is what I buy @ Autozone. Only place to get it - Marked "made in germany" on the back of the bottle.
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=897274 - some good info here, I think - there are alot of threads in the ITR forum about this.

I run 20W50 on my GSR. Stock engine with a lot of races on it. Maybe on a new race motor I would run a thinner oil but not with the miles I have on mine. Keep in mind some guys like Maxx44 are running rebuilt race motors. I would never run 30 in my stock motor.
It seems to be pretty accurate to say that running 5W-30 is a little "light" so to speak! Next time I do an oil change I will try running a bit higher viscosity... In the past I have always heard bad things about Castrol is there Synthetic good?
i second Karl's assessment; i've used 5w-30 mobil 1 for over 50k track miles and never a problem (oil related). this would be on various hondas and a mazda kl-03 engine.
of course, your mileage may vary!

Ah, the good ole' oil debate.
It really just comes down to how often you change it. Everyone will tell you X oil is the best... but in reality all major oil brands are good.
I have never sent my oil out for analysis, so I cant really chime in with anything worth a damn but the one time I ran M1 0w40 with a Honda filter the oil still looked brand new after a track event and 1-2k of street miles.
Im back to running M1 5w30 and Honda filter.

I don't really think anyone has had much of a "problem" with any particular viscosity. But Tom Fowler recommended running 20W50 on a stock motor like mine with a lot of races on it. Since he knows more than I do and because on the straights my car hangs with or pulls on every H3 car I have raced including some with race motors, higher final drive and pimpy header vs. my stock engine with JDM DC 4-1 I will run my Mobil 1 20w50 and change after every race.

Based on RJ's post I'd say abut $4.50 a QT, which is about the average price of M1.
