What do you guys think? oil Prob perhaps?
holy shiznit thats one of the worst ive seen sorry to say. I would do a rebuild on the entire motor and hot tank everything
it has ben my experience that pennzoil can do that to a high revving 4cylinder. i know pennzoil is a big, big no-no in dsm's. and that looks the same. if i were you and the motor is out of the car, id yank the head and take it to a shop and have it tanked, but thats just me. good luck

Is there anyway to clean it? I would think that maybe some kind of engine cleaner would remove some gunk.

like a couple of us stated, its in your best interest for extended mileage that you pull the motor apart and have everything tanked. theres not anything thats going to clean that motor that you can just dump in it and go. that thing needs to be extensivly cleaned.

pshh that aint nothing, you should see the horrible cars we getting coming into my work all day, whenever you get the car running just let the motor idle with 4 quarts of automatic transmission fluid instead of oil. leave it running for about 30 minutes and let it drain, repeat a few times and install your new motor oil, after that replace your oil every 3k miles and be done with it.
use auto-rx. that **** will work.

Will ATF really clean the motor without ******* it up???
I'm planning to do some cleaning and I was thinking of running my oil for 3000 miles, and then right before the change to drain 2 quarts and top it with the ATF and let the car idle for some time...
Then drain it all out and replace the filter and new oil... will it work...
Can anything bad happen to the engine?
Will there be any left-offs of the ATF fluid in the engine after draining that can hurt the car (cos I know that there is always some amount of oil in the head...
Which is the PROPER way to clean with ATF?

Well I gues I will never use penzoil. EVER and I will tell people to stay clear of it. I am going to run a little engine cleaner in it after its in my car.
Thank you all for your help and insight.
Moral of story dont use penzoil. At all.

Go to this site, http://www.rms13.com and see what Auto-Rx did on an engine that was in a lot worse shape than yours.
I think it was Pennzoil that was used it my 80 Impala. Think thats bad? I had clumps of sludge under my valve covers. Not just a little here and there, I had big ******* clumps. I also had about 1/8th inch of **** stuck to the top of my valve covers. It looked like someone tried to rino-line my engine.
