Default So My Timing Belt Keeps Sliding Over......

My timing belt has been giving me nothing but hell this past week. When I finally think I have it set right last night, I let it idle for a bit then pull the valve cover. The timing belt is now hanging about 1/8" off the outside edges of the cam gears!!!!!

I pull the covers, push the belt back onto all the gears, then put it all back together. I turn it over by hand a bunch to see if it's gonna move anymore, and it stays put. I reassemble it and sleep peacefully for a change.

Today, I was showin a friend something under my valve cover when I notice that the belt has slid back over off the gears!

I saw nothing on the side of the motor that could be causing this, and I made sure it was completely on every pulley, as well as on the tensioner. It did not do this before!

Pics will be up later tonight of the problem.

Anyone have any ideas, or had this happen to them before?

Even though the belt is fully on the tensioner - is the tensioner keeping the belt tight enough? How much does it deflect at the loosest part?

Maybe another thing that could make it slip would be a crooked pulley or gear somewhere, or the tensioner again. Or it could be a warped belt I guess.

your motor should have the manual tensioner right? not the auto like the H22a4?

methinks it has to have something to do w/the amount of tension in the system.

Just messing w/my friend B-series recently made me realize to triple check everything, as the belt doesn't like to stay put.

I would recheck the tensioner..

I've had that problem before. For me, the manual tensioner was slightly bent for whatever reason. I changed to a new one and it solved all my problems.

Yes, I'm using the manual tensioner on my H23 VTEC.

I will check the tensioner and the tension on the belt later; this will be like the 5th time in the past week I've pulled the belt.......ugh, this gets old fast.

You did not install the flat washer that goes against the block on that 14mm stud that holds the tensioner pulleys.

If he did that he would know. I did that and my tensioner would not even turn and the end result was a lost tensioner and belt with the car at idle for only 2 min.

I would just recheck the tension. I am suprised you are having this problem becaus eI could barley even get my belt on let along have it come off.

While I kinda doubted that since I had no spare parts left over, I wouldn't doubt that that happened. I will check that tomorrow when I tear the belt off again.

You're damn straight! I've gotten REALLY good at getting that bitch of a belt on over those cam gears!

Before you pull everything apart - did you torque the damper bolt to the correct torque specs? from memory its around 181 - This can make the timing belt move out 1/8 inch. If this is the case let us know because there are other areas that will need to be checked.
Just trying to help.

I have not had a chance to work on it yet. I will TRY to get to it tonight, as work and school are keeping me beyond busy.

No, I am using a Gatorback belt.

how much play do you have on your manual tensioner?
Are you using the h22 or h23 balance shaft pulley?
If you're using the h23 one there isn't even any need for
a washer between the pulleys.

let us know when you figure it out

I am using the H23 balance shaft pulley, but I'm not running the belt. This problem did not arise until the timing belt skipped teeth and I had to reset the belt.

Also Anthony, I am using the H23 manual tensioner, so there was no need to use the washer as you said.

UPDATED SITUATION!:

Well I had to drive on it for two days since I have to go to college, as well as work two jobs. I had no choice. I popped the valve cover tonight to assess the situation, and this is what I find:

So looks like I need a new belt! I'm gonna be replacing it in the next few days, redoing everything carefully, and am going to take a sledgehammer to this thing if it starts to slide over again.

Moral of the story? If there's a problem, DON'T PROCRASTINATE AND MAKE IT WORSE!!!

EDIT:

Also, I'm still having problems. As far as I can tell, the timing marks are all dead on. Yet I am still having a low idle and a slight misfire at idle! Here's my marks, they look dead on, right?:

You might check the tensioner pulley bolt. If it is bent then the belt might walk off the pullies. And it is likely to be the only thing bent (not likely). Your other options are that the cams/crank/ or waterpump pulley is bent. Otherwise if everything is square you should not have any trouble with the belt sliding off to one side. Hope you get it figured out.

Well I'll double check for that washer; it should be there, i haven't removed that bolt since the motor was built, and it hasn't had the problem until recently.

Thanks for the pic, BTW!

Good pic Anthony, that washer comes stock on the h23 so
if he swapped everything over he should have that washer.

I just did the conversion myself so i remember having it.

LudeyKrus, you said you're not runing the Balance Shaft belt correct?

But you still have the balance shaft pulley on there?

I don't see how the timing belt is clearing the outer pulley.
You would think that it would rub against it
Take a look at this pic

also check the tq on the stud. when i forgot the washer the belt smoked like hell. the time the block was stripped where the stud bolted in, it walked like that.

like anthony said you really neeed that washer. Also man something else may have gotten screwed up in the conversion so if I was you I would make sure all your pulleys line up straight. Otherwise you could couse a wobble in the belt and hence what happened to you!

Well I got it all pulled apart today, but I didn't have the belt in time to put it back together before I went to work.

The washer on the back of the long tensioner bolt is there; I did that right.

I did notice that the "nut" that tightens down on the tensioner was not tight, so I believe that may have been the problem. Honestly, I can't see what else it would have been. I am going to put the belt back on straight, tighten it down good, and see if it does it again.

One thing I did notice, though: now that I don't have the balancer belt on, the balancer tensioner pulley tends to shift all the way to one side when tightening down the "nut", even if I hold it in place. Can this cause any problems, and is it normal?
